I've been looking to get an NF7-S, but on newegg.com, they list the Onboard Audio for the NF7-S as the same thing as the regular non -S version board has: 6-channel AC 97 CODEC.

What's up with that?

but on newegg it says both have the same thing...

Did they make a newer, crappier sounding NF7-S?

The Soundstorm thats built into the southbridge still needs a way to communicate with the outside world. Thats where the AC97 comes in. Every nforce2 board will have something like it. Most use the Realtek ALC650.

The chip in question:

NF7-S Specs:

8RDA+ Specs:

AC97 is just a compliancy standard.
