View Full Version : [SOLVED] Question about 1 gighertz to 1.4 gighertz cpu's
Ok i recently heard that chips that are made from 1000mhz to 1400 mhz are all the same chip. Amd just went and overclocked each chip and sold them to the consumer . I also think that people with 1000mhz chips are getting to 1400-1500 speeds with no problems. Im not sure if i should spend 85 bucks on a 1000mhz chip or just go for the 1333 mhz chip for 135 dollars.

You see amd mnakes the 1.33ghz chips in their fabs, thaen they mark them w/ a laiser (on the die). So yes there really the same chip, just different factory ratings.
If your low on money get the 1ghz chip, but rember that you may not get an axia chip and it will overclock to only say 1250. going for the lower chip is like gamblimg to see if you get a good code. I would go for the 1.33

All the chips are made to the same design, but for whatever reasons some can run reliably at higher speeds than others. Because the 1.33/1.4gig etc chips are expensive, AMD generally just test enough chips to get a few of these high-end ones, then label the rest as slower speeds because they know they can sell more at lower speeds - they're cheaper. Hence it's possible that when buying a 1gig chip, you might actually get one that had they tested, would have done 1.4GHz - basically a 1.4gig chip!
Of course the risk is that you may get a 1GHz chip that they had tested, and wouldn't do any more than 1GHz. That's why it's such a gamble. And that's why buying higher speed chips is generally a good idea, because if AMD say it can do 1.33GHz for example, it'll probably do a bit more than that - they always give themselves a bit of headroom :)
