My buddy just picked up a new AMD board a processor so I went to check out his setup, he had a Athlon 1GHz processor with the B stepping (200) bus. Anyway, I noticed it was AXIAR and so I recommended to him to a Thermalright SK-6 and some Artic Silver2 compound. He was glad to join the overclocking realm and push his new cpu to the limits. Next, we tried overclocking the chip as high as it would go. On out first try with 1.85V in bios with Abit KT7A-R, we got it to boot at 1680MHz. But because his case lacks case fans, that would never have worked because the temp kept rising and there was no air to get rid of the air in the case. SUCKED but anyway, so then I tried to find out how high the CPU would be stable with defualt voltage. 1533MHz was the final clock speed.

Using defualt 1.75Volts with 3.4Volts Motherboard, his processor ran 100% stable at 1533MHz (133.33x11.5). 3dmark2000 and prime95 were as smooth as silk. Scoring 11050 points in 3Dmark2000. Not bad, not bad.

In conclusion, the AXIAR is the final stepping of the 1GHz Athlon since after september, they will pull it off the market to make room for the higher models. And plus the latest t-bird 1.53Ghz will come out and lower prices even further.

p.s - Enjoy the new low price of the Athlon chips as of monday next week, AMD will finally break a new record introducing the first 1GHz economy Duron on Monday. Cant wait to see the benchmarks and heat production of this new sucker. This should drop the price on the 1GHz - 1.2Ghz chips $20.

I doubt that the 1 GHz Duron will be very big news.... UNLESS.....

It's a morgan core. If we're still getting Durons from the Spitfire core, you'll still see OC speeds topping out at 1250-1300 MHz.

Most likely, it'll be more expensive than a 1 GHz Athlon at its initial debut, and probably won't overclock as far.

This is why the new speed Durons don't excite me - getting a Duron is all about value. This will change once Morgan comes out - being SMP capable, not to mention the fact that we will have a whole new core to work with (and find its upper speed limit, heh heh), makes it exciting enough and worthwhile enough to consider investing in one. until then, I think I'm going to be getting a 1 GHz AXIAR.
