Well, after only 4 months my wd rapter has died. I bought it from newegg right around the time they first started getting them.

Windows exploror was locking up and having all sorts of corrupted files issues. So I reformated / reinstalled. I didnt even have all the windows updates installed the second time and I started getting corrupted file warnings. System reboot then I started getting a bios warning about a problem with the drive.

I grabbed an old IDE drive and set that drive as the primary and put the wd rapter as a secondary drive so I could try and reformat the drive. The system wont let me do anything at all with the serial drive connected regardless what its set to. The system wont even make it through post unless I disconnect it. Stating there is a serious problem with the drive. It also stated there was something like (insert rediculious num here) bad sectors or something.

:( :(

Same thing happend to my Raptor bro. I had to RMA it and it should be coming to my door today. The rMa process took a couple weeks so you better get started. WD has a good RMA service. All you have to do is register and type in the Raptor drive S/N and they e-maill you a RMA number immediately.

Here is the WD RMA page. (http://support.wdc.com/warranty/selection.asp?custtype=END)

Good luck bro!

Good question. Hmmmmm, I had my 2 raptors (raid o) stacked ontop of one another on the HD rack in my vapo....that only left maybe a 1/2 centimeter between the 2. But I did have a 172mm Rotron fan blowing directly on them. THe 172mm fan is running on 12v which is only half of its rated draw of 24v. Its rated output is 210cfm (I think) so I had 105cfm pumped directly on it. However....I am not sure if that 105cfm made it into the 1/2 centimeter hotspot.

Thanks for the link. I just hope its not to expensive to rma. When I got the drive it certainly wasnt the price it is now. Had I waited I could have gotton 2 for the price of one. Yet another downfall of getting something when its first released.

As far as heat,
I didnt have any drives stacked on top of each other. At the time the drive was failing it was the only drive I had in there. I was trying to save up for a second drive so I could put them in raid. The drive had 2 intake fans blowing directly over the drive. There is a filter on the front of my case so dont think it was dust or heat.

This is the first wd drive ive had fail on me in about 7 years. Last one was a 2 gb cavier drive that suffered the click of death ( altho not as remotely as bad as a zipdrive click of death). WD sent me a 6 gb drive replacement because they were no longer shipping the drive the I had sent them. BTW that 6 gb replacement drive they sent me is still functioning in a family members beater computer to this day.

Yah, I want a raptor too, but uh, I don't want it to die in 4 months. I for one don't enjoy reinstalling windows, that takes away from my folding time. ;)

yeah if they were stacked rightontop of each other that might have done it. I try to keep as much space between my HD as possible, though even that didnt help with ym DEATHSTAR. Oh well. Hmm I think ill wait till the 72gb models comes out to see wether to jump in or not. thnx for the nfo though
