Hey guys I haven't been into OC'ing in a little while so I'm somewhat outta the loop. Can you guys tell me (generally)what it takes nowadays to OC a newer T-BIRD, namely a 1.333GHZ 266FSB one? I currently have a PIII650Mhz O/C'd 900+, looking for a DDR upgrade....back then you had to solder and stuff to OC AMD's, not my kinda fun. I just wanna go into mobo BIOS, change multiplier, change FSB, etc. Good ole' INTEL'ish OCing! Anyways if you can briefly explain what it takes nowadays to OC them newer T-Birds I'd greately appreciate!
TIA!

Welcome to the Forum

The socket based Tbirds and Durons are usually locked via small lines on top of the processor, these are called bridges.. Connecting the level 1 bridges unlocks the multiplier and allows you to select what you want. While the level 7 bridges allows the voltage of the chip to be altered although this is not always necessary as some of the CPU's come from the factory already unlocked. You can unlock the CPU in many ways and people have used things ranging from pencils through to the defogger repair kits for preparing the heated rear window in motor vehicles (basically anything that conducts electricity). The AMD CPU's run warmer than the Intel CPU's and as such usually require better cooling.
The 266 FSB is not a physical FSB and refers to the internal speed of the CPU which is a double pumped FSB (133 x 2).

I would suggest reading the beginners guides on the front of this site as it contains information that would be useful

Hey Mudfreak, I am pretty new to the whole game of OC. However I have learnt quite a bit from browsing these forums. I recommend you should do this first. If you get a decent board like an Iwill, Abit Asus or Epox boards you'll be able to change the FSB, Voltage and I/O pretty easily by either changing the jumpers on the board or in the bios. However AMD have recently being producing Athlons with the L1 bridges uncut so you don't have
to do the pencil trick to unlock them. I recommend you should buy the Iwill ddr board has it has great oc features and great stability. Wish you luck!

Yeah I used to read these forums alot back in the PIII450@600+ OC'ing days. Yeah before integrated L2 cache:p I know this place is extremely useful, hence why I posted here instead of anyplace else.

Anyways....I was thinking about the MSI mobo, but all I hear is praise from this Epox offering. I thought the Iwill was first generation, but I'm sure it's stable though. Dunno what to do now......
