Whenever I download something from the internet with WinXP, it's never a complete download. Watching the download dialog box shows that the download gets the entire file, but when I go to open it it's only a piece of the file. .rar's tell me that I only have part of the entire archive, .exe's tell me that they're incomplete or that I need disk 2, etc. What the heck is going on? This only happens in XP, when I boot into Win2000 all my downloads are fine.

make sure you download none corrupted file

if the file you download doesn't work in winxp but works in w2k, 2 things to try

1-download and install flashget and use this program to download any programs. This program is awesome and SUPER FAST

2-run chkdsk on your C drive and make sure you have enough memory to extract any rar files

Here's a few things you can try...if you're using any third party download manager, disable or uninstall it. If you're using a Firewall program, check the settings...(Tiny Firewall is known for causing this). If you're using an "Ad" filter program, disable it and see if downloads work.

Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | "File Types" tab | Highlight the File Type in question (the type you're having a problem downloading) | "Advanced" button | Put a check in the box that reads: Confirm open after download.

Clean/clear out your IE Temp/TIF/cache files (IE | Tools | Internet Options | "General" tab | "Delete Files" button). Temp Files: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp.

Start | Run | Type the following command...REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL

Click OK and reboot. Next, open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Programs | "Reset Web Settings" button. :)

I know it's not CHKDSK, and I know it's not amount of memory. It's not a hardware problem, because it's worked fine with previous XP installations and, like I said, it works in 2000. Thanks redduc900, i'll give it a shot.

Ok, tried all the things you suggested and those don't fix it. I might try a download manager, but I'd really rather not.

You may want to try reinstalling IE6 SP1...

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q318378)

You can download IE6 SP1 from the following MS site...

Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp)

The Repair portion of the above article describes how to use the System File Checker (SFC) to check for and restore missing or corrupt files, which could be the cause of your problem.

You could also try this...Start | Search | Select "All Files and Folders" | Select "More Advanced Options", and place a checkmark beside the "Search Hidden Files and Folders" option | Ensure that "Search System Folders" and "Search Subfolders" are also checked | In the "All or Part of the File Name" box, type ie.inf | In the "Look In" drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the HDD that contains the Windows folder | Click the "Search" button | In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in the %systemroot%\Inf folder | Right click the ie.inf file and click "Install" from the context menu | Reboot after the file copy process is complete. :)
