View Full Version : Getting XP Pro...install questions.
I am currently running Win98SE on a recently formatted 30Gig drive.
Do I have to format again:( ?
Can I just install the new OS?...I am planning on staying with FAT32 file system.
you would need to get the upgrade version of winXP, but you would need to check if it will upgrade from win98SE, because i've only used it to upgrade win98, but im sure it would work.
you can let it convert the file system to NTFS from FAT32, and still keep all your data.
if your reasons for sticking with FAT32 is purely due to fear of loss of data, then don't worry, I've converted to NTFS many times. you don't lose any data.
cleanest is a fresh install, but if you want to keep all your settings and programs, then upgrading is the way to go. I'm pretty sure it will upgrade from 98SE.

Thanks...just found answer at Microsoft Support Knowledge Base.
Full version will upgrade or do clean install. Upgrade version will only upgrade.

if you want to play your DOS games, you will need to run a dual boot as winxp completely eliminates DOS mode... not even emulation that can run the games...
OK...maybe I am mistaken about this...one of the games we run is (I assumed) DOS based...It is an older Pinball game called "The Web" My friend (who is running XP Pro...and FAT32) can run it...something about compatibility mode?
Wow...I just noticed I got another star...what did I do?:D

You can get the upgrade edition to save some money but you can use the full version to upgrade:D
but you might want to stick the XP CD in while 98 is run ning then go to start
then run
then type d:setup.exe
then perform additional tasks
then transfer files and settings.
This feature lets you save your files and settings to restore in a clean install of XP. That way you will not have the junl left behind by 98 to cause problems. just make sure youi back up all your data:D
Here is a bonus since I had to look it up anyways;)

An upgrade is an upgrade.... no matter what version. Psssst....wanna know a secret? The only difference between a "upgrade" and "full version" is the part that searches for or asks you to insert the prior version disk. Both versions contain the same files, setup, etc.
