View Full Version : What the heck? 2 Tbird 1.4's that won't run higher than 1.1 anymore?

OK, I am a newbie to overclocking, but not to computers in general.

Q:
I have 2 1.4's. (1 for BKP)
Both unlocked
Both are the AY's
A7A266 mobo
water-cooling (temps are still to high for some reason, but that's a different question)

People always say " it just started happeneing".
..., but for real this did:
I had been changinf the FSB up higher, and higher, hit lockups, of mem errs, then I would drop back to something stable (slightly over 1500 for about a week)
Then, fri night, I can barely boot 1050?!?
WTF
I tried to creep it up again slowly, just over 1100, then BAM
again back to 1050.
I figure I've "done it now" screwed the pooch, astalavista to my first "o-clock"

So I pull the block off ( must be a pound of freakin copper)
swap with my trusty backup bird (I'm thinkin' ahead now)
still 1050, what? I said still 1050!!!

Only someone who has laid out this much CASH, in the last few weeks...
Someone who crept alon on an old P2 233 for the last 4 years...
Only someone who has toasted evrything fresh "outa tha box" can truly understand my dimeanor.

If there is anyone with a kind soul that can tell me anything other than swap the mobo (Thats th qustion I'm afraid to ask)

PS
I've pulled all my cards, tried 1 stick of sdram at a time, and tried two different HDDs

Thanks for any help, and for the ops of this Board, GOOD WORK!

Have you tried clearing the cmos ram and re-entering your bios settings? That is where I would start.

1st cmos clear, no-go

Maybe I didn't do it just right?

2nd time,
We are back at 1400 Houston!!!!!!

It seems the simple solutions are the ones we try last, and always work.

Thanks Again!!

In my first post I hinted to a different problem I am attemtpting to cure.
Titled:
Cooling, and what the heck am I doing wrong?

I think this may be more suited for the "cooling" section, but I also feel that the "AMD-crowd" are the ones giving the most feedback in this area, so please excuse meif I'm not in the right place, but...

I have a good pump, nice big hunk of copper for a block, decent fan on the 5x10 RAD, and I also have added 2 PHSF (pelt / heat / sink / fan-combo) to the opposite side of the Rad, sooo..
Big delta is pulling from one side, and the 2-pHSF's pulling the opposite direction.

My room temp is high 82.6 right now
My water temp just out of the block is 81.2
My BIOS reports a Mobo temp of 86, and a cpu temp of 140

I have tried:
1.
putting the rad on top of a block of ice :)
2.
mounting different fan combos on the rad
3.
2 different cpus both 1.4's
4.
A huge freakin box fan where the side panel should be :)

Which is where I'm at now.
Any suggestions will be heartily attempted
Thanks

About why the Clear CMOS worked...

Sometimes whenever you make your TB go soooo fast it wont like it and it screws stuff up in CMOS. I noticed this because my BIOS screen had erratic data in it, i tells ya it looked weird. Whenever this happens a clear CMOS should work.

I had this happen to my pc when I tried to boot at 1100 @ 1250 when the max I can get with my psu is about 1189Mhz. I also had this happen to a friends comp who I took to 133FSB with the retail HSF thinking that temps looked low.

What waterblock are you using? You might want to make sure it's mounted properly. If it attaches via the socket tabs be VERY careful tightening it down because I did that and snapped off the tabs and lost 2 tbirds that way. I've got a dangerden block arriving today (hopefully) that mounts via the 4 holes around the socket and WON'T fall off and mounts much nicer.
