View Full Version : My 1.4 ghz T-Bird gets wet.
Not really... but:
Right now I have regular air cooling on my 1.4 ghz T-bird, and i want to switch to water cooling. I have a shim on it right now. When i take my Heatsink and heatsink fan off and all that, would i keep my shim on when mounting the water block? Or would it just be my chip on my motherboard, with the water block over it? Thanks
Matt
You can use whatever you want to. I used a shim for both air-cooling and water-cooling up until I used a digital thermometer right next to the core and didn't have the space. With an expensive chip like a tbird I would use a shim to protect your core when tightening down a waterblock.

Id use a shim-it might give ya 1-2 degrees higher but still id rather have a semi warm chip over a crushed chip. Use the Ship, unless you are very careful putting on the HS

Darn, my first double post in months
I would only use a shim when watercooling.

I was thinking about getting a shim when I got my new thunderbird setup. I'm thinking about it because it will be mt first time having a thunderbird and I don't know how easy it is to crack the core. i also need low temps though. Does anyone know if the ocz gladiator is easy to put on or would it be a good idea to get a shim.
It was a pain for me with my a7a266.
