View Full Version : I think I fried my TBird!!

Let me start by saying my Tyan motherboard does not have BIOS settings to change the multiplier of my chip, so I decided to use the L6 bridges to do it manually. I was trying to LOWER the multiplier on my 1300MHz TBird from 12.5 to 11.0 so I could raise the FSB from 200 to 266.

My L6's looked like this:

. : : l l = 12.5 multiplier

I changed them to this:

. l l l l = 11.0 multiplier

I did this with a very thin #2 pencil, and did a nice job. I did not change the FSB jumper at this time, it was still set to 200MHz.

When I put the chip back in and fired it up, I got no video. I turned it off and back on, still nothing. I took out the chip and it was HOT to the touch. Not just the core, but even the ceramic casing. I cleaned off my pencil markings and tried again the way it originally was, and still nothing.

Did I fry it??? How did this happen?? I UNDERclocked it. It should have been fine.

Someone please share some wisdom...

BUt those bridges are so small ive seen numerous people cross some of the bridges on accident-connecting the wrong ones and that could fry it.

I definitely did not cross them. I used a powerful magnifying glass, and inspected the job thoroughly before cranking it back up.

Oh well, I can get another chip. My biggest fear is that I damaged the board too. I don't want to put a brand new chip in it if it's going to fry it too!!

Hmmm.... Maybe I'l just buy an I-will KK266 instead...

Clear the cmos and see if you can boot. A pencil eraser does a great job at cleaning up any thermal compound or pencil marks on a chip so you may want to try that first. If all else fails you have a neat key chain.

Bender, thanks but I've done that already. Cleared the CMOS jumper, even took out the battery for 15 minutes. Cleaned the CPU thoroughly with a pencil eraser, etc...

It's dead. Services will be held this afternoon.

You did have a HSF on the chip, didn't you? If you didn't that is why the chip is toasted. Athlons/Durons will not survive virtually any time without a way to get rid of the heat.

Of course I did... Securely seated with Arctic Silver II no less...

Good the only reason I asked is you didn't state it and we have had a rash of people "testing" their CPUs prior to installing the HSF recently.

I did this with a duron and cleaned it with Acetone adn it was fine afterwards. I would try the clean chip in another mobo. pencil eraser is not good enough try any solvent and look for chips too!

Well, it looks like it was definitely fried. I slapped a new 1.33 AYHJA in there and it fired right up. Now I am contemplating a new board, possibly the KK266-R since my board doesn't allow multiplier adjustments and the FSB won't go any higher than 140.

look at what wild_andy_Ç has done with the epox it is something I am looking at getting one cuz I already have a kk266r
