View Full Version : Athlon MP [urgent!!]
I was wondering if all athlon MPs came unlocked or if you had to do it yourself. If you have to do it yourself how do you do it?? I'm going to buy one in an hour so it's urgent
99% chance you won't have to worry about a thing. But I wouldn't order now. I'd wait until some more better mobos come out.
I fried my 1.33 TBird a few days ago and am replacing it with the MP. It is more cost effective for me to get an MP instead of TBird. With an MP I wont have to buy a new power supply [I have a generic 300W athlon certified.]

What is the mp

The Athlon MP(multi processor) is a chip that will go in to a dual cpu board-then you can put in another chip and have 2 cpu's on 1 boad- just imagine you have 2 1.2 gig MP's overclocked to 1.5gigs-thats a total or 3gig processor power. Look at pricewatch.cokm for the prices
So, do you need a specific mobo that has two sockets, or do the two processors somehow fit into eachother? I'm assuming it requires a dual processor mobo, but let me know if I'm right.
only requires a dual board for dual operation. I'm using it for a single board

why in the heck use it for a single board- youd get just the same performnce with a non-MP chip plus youll save over $100bucks the MP is expensive. The MP only really xcel in the dual setup
with the MP I wont have to buy a new PS... saves me money. Besides I could always stick it in a dual setup someday when the tech finally evolves

Why do you think you won't have to buy a new power supply. The MP chips use only slightly less power than an equivalently clocked Athlon. Get a 1.2 athlon for $100 and be happy.
Actually 20% less which makes my power supply able to support higher speeds than I can overclock to.

When building a overclocked system the first thing I definatly wouldnt skimp on is the memory, and the second is the power supply.. I think your just setting ur self up for destruction again.. Besides how do you figure buying a athlon mp which is over 230.00 is more cost effective than buying a nice Enermax 350 watt power supply for about 65 bucks and the athlon 1.2 w/ 266fsb which is under 100.00 at some places.. Actually cheaper to go this route..
I probably am setting myself up, but it's my choice right?? Also, I would only buy an enermax 431 or up. I never really said price was an issue either :-). To add onto that I bought it hours ago as the original post indicates. In my opinion the advancements represented by the Athlon 4 are worth it [not just in power savings.] I run a lot of very highly CPU intensive programs 100% of the time... I constantly program cryptographical and mathmatical programs which require a very long time to execute [weeks on several Athlons and Intel machines.] I feel the workstation/server optimizations are more well suited for me.

Palomino is the MP...And its faster than a tbird with sdram and ddr...
If he wants that little bit extra performance then he can get the palomno...
