View Full Version : Q about stock AMD HSF (new and old)

I asked this on the AMD forum but I might get an answer quicker here since I need to put my brother's computer back together soon.

I was wondering which HSF setup would be better, the smaller plain looking ones that came with the fan that spins at over 4000rpm (came with older Palaminos and T-breds)... or the ones that come with the barton's which have a nicer heatsink with a copper base but the fan only spins at 2900rpm?

I know by looking at both side by side, you can tell the newer one is of higher quality and is quieter... but which one does a better job of cooling off an older Athlon 1ghz?

Also is it possible that the big crappy volcano 9 heatsink coupled with a slower "silent boost" 80mm fan would cool things off better than either of these?

Barton heatsink is much better then Palomino/T-Bred heatsink.

Volcano 9 vs Barton heatsink? I'd ask in the cooling section, though that silent slow fan may not be enough for major overclocking with any of them...

This system is locked and I don't trust the unlocking method enough to overclock it (especially considering it isn't mine :D)... besides it is the second worst stepping for this series of chips!

You answered the more important of the 2 questions anyway... the fan may spin slower but it has a different design to it and will probably do a better job than the old one would.

If somebody could still answer as to wether the TT v9 HS with the SB fan would be better or worst, I would still like to hear it (SB fan flows 27.5CFM @ 21dBA)

I would imagine that the Volcano9 with the SmartFan2 would be a bit better than the Barton heatsink, but I am not too sure bout throwing a 27.5CFM fan onto it. My best guess would be that the Volcano9 with that low speed fan on it would perform worse than the Barton heatsink, but that is only a guess.

Scrap them both, and get you a Thermalright SK-7, and a good adjustable fan.

Best of luck ;)

I guess you missed the part about this being a locked 1ghz system that doesen't even belong to me? :p

???????????
ok look, I wouldn't use these HSF's I'm mentioning here on my system. These are for a SLOW NON-OVERCLOCKED machine that's not mine... I am simply asking which of these HSF's that I already own should I use?

Not the usual "what should I go with?" question :p

Yeah, instead of :bang head,
here's what you do, ProBoner (heh, boner)
put that disclaimer upfront then post the same question here:
http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=6

People in the AMD section got 1 thing on their minds and 1 thing only: How do I get a higher overclock. Everything else just bounces right off as you've seen above.

Sorry bud.

So I've noticed :D

I was originally going to post in the cooling forum but I decided to post here instead since it's AMD CPU owners that would know the answer and probably not the avg o/c junkie from the cooling section :D

All of those would cool that 1GHz so use the one you don't mind to lose. If I were you I would use the old cheap Pally HS and keep the 'nicer' ones.

Its my brother's computer, I was nice and used the barton HSF.

But I did figure out that one of my 80mm case fans spins at over 3500rpm which would make it pretty decent of a replacement for that "silent boost" fan on the crappier volcano 9 HS!

Plus I think I might have a lot more air being pulled out than drawn in, so I should throw that silent boost fan on the case and steal the other one for backup purposes...
