View Full Version : Shims
I am not so good when it comes to installing HSF.
I just got a TE, and was wondering should I get a Shim to use before putting on the TE?
Is the TE hard to put on?
Cheers!!!

If you feel your having a hard time mounting HSF's, you might want to consider purchsing a shim. Are you installing the HSF with the Motherboard out of your case? That usually seems to be the easiest way to mount an HSF that's giving you problems.
Shims can be helpful but if mounted incorrectly they can also cause problems. You mention "TE" as your hsf...is that ThermoEngine?
I have a ThermoEngine and it's really easy to install and you don't have to worry about cracking your CPU at all. It's pretty tough to do with a ThermoEngine during installation. Removal is another story, however. I decided to remove it to unlock my processor and it's insanely hard to remove as you have to put lots of pressure on the clip with a screwdriver to remove it and too much pressure will crack your core. It's nervewracking too because the screwdriver kept slipping out of the clip. I heard something crack too when I was removing it. I thought it was the CPU. To this day I still don't know what it was. Processor, socket and heatsink are all fine. In any case, it's easy to install but good luck removing it. ;-)
