He is an average PC user, and does a small amount of gaming (BF 1942).

Will there be any huge differences between these two chips?:

-Intel Celeron 2.4 ghz (P4 based), 400mhz FSB
-Intel P4 2.0 ghz, 400 mhz FSB

I'd rather go with the Celeron if the performance is decent and it is somewhat dependable. The Celeron is about $55 less.

at default speeds you won't see much of a difference in everyday apps like word, internet, but in intensive games like 1942 there will be a big difference. If you oc the celeron chip to about 3gig the performance will start to approach the p4 2.0 default.

Thanks for the info. Maybe the Celeron 2.7 would be a good compromise.

the small cache on the celly really hampers its performnce compared to the p4.
