I just got finished building my new comp last night and everything works but the 9800 pro. Did a little trouble shooting and it's really crazy what's going on.

The 9800 Pro will not put out a video signal when in my computer. The fan on it kicks on but no video signal goes out.

We put it in my friends computer and it comes on and works fine. So maybe it's my computer and the agp slot? Don't think so because we put he's geforce 3 in my computer and it works. I got a video signal and we were able to get into my bios.

So we tried every which way of hooking the power up to the radeon 9800 pro. Because after reading their installation guide on their site you have to hook it up through the hard drives power supply. But I have a Sata drive so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. So we hooked it up straight to my computers power supply with nothing else hooked up just to see if we could get anything. And it still did not put out a video signal. But the fan on the card is coming on and it is getting hot.

So now I'm at a loss of what to do. I guess I'm going to call ATI but I thought I'd ask on here first seeing if anyone every had anything like this to happen and if they got it working.

Computer specs are:

AMD 2500 XP
Abit NF7-S Mobo
1024 Corsair Ram PC 3200
Seagate 120 GB Sata Drive
Lite On 16x DVD Rom
Lite on 52x 42x 52x cdrw
Sound Blaster Live 16 bit pci
Aspire 350 watt power supply

My friends comps specs if this helps, the one it worked in:

Amd 1600 or 1700 xp
512 of ram
abit motherboard, not sure which one
300 watt power supply

Any help would be awesome, thanks!

Which power molex you connect to is not an issue. I don't use the hard drive cable, I use an independant one and it works fine. (I used the HD one first that worked too).

Check your bios for AGP settings. 9800 will only work with 4x/8x.

Also try unplugging your CD drives. You my have a power issue. ATI min req is 300W, but I've heard of people not being able to run on 300W. Your's may be under powered depending on the draw from your other components.

I unplugged all the power connectors to everything but the motherboard and I took the splitter off the card and hooked the floppy power connector right into it.

Card gets power and still no picture.

Doubled checked all the settings in the bios and all seem correct.

Called Sapphire and the only thing they could tell me is either it's an interference between the plate that is on the front of the monitor port or the motherboard is having interference. So he said take the motherboard out of the case and hook everything up and try it. Kinda hesistant to do that right now.

I couldn't remove that plate because the screw is on their tight and I don't want to break the card.

I'm clueless now.

Oh and I have a 350 power supply and that shouldn't be the problem, should it?

Try resetting the CMOS with the jumpers on the motherboard. If you don't know how, check your motherboard's manual. There is probably some type of issue with a setting in the BIOS, and with no video output, you can't get into the BIOS so the easiest way to fix it is by resetting the CMOS. Of course, you could also put in your friend's video card and go into BIOS and make sure that all of the settings are correct. I believe it's easier and safer to just reset the CMOS, however. If that doesn't work, let us know and I'll think of something else.

that should be enough for it, what are your voltages right now like your 12, 5, 3.3? i would also recommend reseting the cmos

I don't know if this will help, but when I put together one of my computers which used a Soltek NF2 board, I had to hold F8 when I booted it the first time. I spent the better part of a day trying to figure that one out.

I did everything I think you can do. I called both Abit and Sapphire and did what they said. Sapphire said to first take the metal plate off the front of the card and try that. Didn't work. So then they said take the motherboard out of the case and hook everything up and that didn't work.

Called Abit and they said update the bios. So I did and that didn't work. The Radeon 9800 pro works in every computer but mine. I really really don't understand this. And I just put my ti4400 in my new comp and it's working. So I know it's not the motherboard or anything. It's absolutely crazy. I have no idea what else to do besides send the card back to Newegg and get another one.

I reset the cmos settings a couple times last night also. All the settings were correct. So I dunno. Anything else anyone can think of what to do?

Have you tried running anyother vid card in this mother board. If another card doesn't work, looks like your MB. If it does, it's your card.

Well, the card works in other computers, so I really doubt it could be the card. Do you have another PSU you can try? 350w should be fine, but you never know...

Yes. 3 different ones.

Yep, had 2 old ones..both 300watts in my other 2 comps. One has agp and ones doesn't. But the ones with agp the card works fine in with it's 300w ps and 2 hds and 2 cdrom drives.

I put both power supplies in my new comp and tested them and still no luck.

Was just going to see if anyone else had any suggestions before I RMA it back to newegg. Thats all I can think to do...=/

try to remove all add in cards besides the graphics, boot with only the things you need, mobo, ram, cpu, graphics. see if that helps.

Wait, does ur motherboard have a on-board GPU?????...if so u might have to disable that before using the R9800Pro...good luck ;)

Try a different video card in your mother board. It may be your AGP connection on the MB.

I doubt it's your 9800 that is bad... It works in other systems. I'm guessing, if there's a problem with anything, it's your motherboard.

I tried removing everything but the bare minimum like you said and still no difference.

About the onboard Gpu...I'm pretty sure my abit nf7-s doesn't have an onboard gpu.

It's madness! I have no idea what is will not work with my system but it does with everyone elses but other cards work in my system....*sigh*

that is some crazy stuff man. sorry to hear that.

It might be a compatiblity issue with your R9800Pro and your motherboard.... I have heard these things happen...

Thats what I was thinking. Would you think it would just be that card as in the one I have and maybe a different Sapphire 9800 Pro might work?

Or the whole lot of 9800 pros that Sapphire makes wouldn't be compatilbe?

CamH

Well, Sapphire cards are the same as BBA cards, and I have a BBA 9800NP in my NF7. So, I doubt it is any compatibility issue.

It might have...u never know these days...

My setup: Abit IS7, 2.4 P4, 512MB Geil Golden Dragon PC3200, Seagate 120GB SATA, Lite-on DVD, Goldstar 15" monitor, 350 watt Fortron PS, Ahanix Audi XP case.

I have sent back both the Saphire 9800 Pro and the MB. Still the same problem with the replacements. They will not work togather. Luckily I have 6 PCs in various stages of build to swap parts with. In this config, I have successfully run a NVIDIA GF2 and Herc GF3, an ATi 9500 Pro, 9600Pro AIW, and 9700Pro AIW. All run great, but the Saphire 9800 Pro will not even post. I have changed out to a 400 watt CompUSA PS, swapped out the RAM, tried running without any other components, etc,, etc., all with no luck! Believe me, this one has me stumped, and I don't get stumped easily.

On a ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe V1.4, 2.5 Barton, 512MB Kingmax BGA PC2700, 400 watt CompUSA PS, Phillips CD-RW, Pioneer DVD, 40GB Maxtor EIDE, Aspire X-Dreamer case (modded), the Saphire runs like a dream. You can actually see freckles on Luke Skywalker in Jedi Academy with the card turned up to full quality.
