Hi, I'm looking to build a computer for my mom. All it's really gonna get used for is word processing, and some internet. I was planning on getting a 1.6 Duron off of newegg, but I was wondering, what are my chances of getting a t-bred A core. I was planning on ordering tonight, so If you could I'd like the answer quickly.

Thanks.

You mean 'not getting a T-Bred A core'. They do 300 MHz less than T-Bred B's.

$62 2100+ is a guaranteed B at newegg, that's what you want to get if you don't want to gamble on 1800+ being an A or B.

I don't think he cares about OCing it

No, I really don't care about OC'ing it, I was just wondering if I would even notice a difference in the temps between an A and B at stock speeds cooled with a Thermalright SK-947U.

Well, I bought a 1400Mhz Duron off of Newegg a few weeks ago and it was a B. But since your not overclocking anyway, there are no differences in temps at same voltages. Oh yeah, DONT BUY THE SK-947U!!!!! I bought a dr thermal heatsink for $14 from Newegg and the processor never ever went above 32C. I would go so far as to say that a stock amd barton cooler is overkill for that kind of processor. Your wasting your money bigtime unless you plan to overclock it to 2.3Ghz!!!

Wait a minute, I bet that with a SK-947U and good case ventilation, you wouldnt even need a fan on that sink.

Yes you would need a fan. I would go with a stock cooler if you are not going to overclock...there is no need for an aftermarket heatsink

I already have the sk-947u left over from another pc, and I'm not planning on using it for anything else, so i want to make my mom's computer as quiet as possible.

Sorry but I was kind of not being serious, ie sarcasm. Well since you have the sink, why not overclock? Dont raise the voltage, just the multiplier or fsb. It wont make the computer run hotter. An idea for a fan would be a 92mm vantec stealth, if indeed you find them stealthy, or just lower the volts on a good 92mm fan. I bet with the duron at 1.5 volts and the SK-947U, you could have a nearly silent fan pushing 20CFM and still be really cool. Good luck with your mom's computer.
