XP boot times seem to range anywhere from 15s to 60s...

I've noticed something quite weird.

The loading time of Windows XP does not seem to be constant.

The fastest loading time I've timed on this computer (2400+ running at 2.3Ghz, NF7-S with 512MB RAM, 3x WD1200JB, GF2 MX400 etc...) was 15s for that section with the moving progress bar. Slowest is around 60s for that progress bar to finish moving.

This is with a slightly modified NTOSKRNL.EXE, XP Pro SP1, so that it looked like this: http://www.student.kuleuven.ac.be/~m0324684/boot2.jpg

has anyone noticed this, or am I alone in this observation?

I have noticed it too. I doesn't make sense to me either.
Im a attribuiting it do XP being crap.

When my boot times in XP get that long I go into the prefetch foldr and delet everything that is in there. It does help.

yea this happens to me too, sometimes when i tighten my timings, windows never gets past the thing with the moving bar.... im not sure if its the same problem though, it seems to be similar.

U have managed to get my OS from that section into the loggon box within 4-6s..... i don't do the tweaking that i used to do..... it took me ages to do.... lots of modifications.... i might write a tip article on it.....

wow! I do notice that that booting with Intel systems do happen a lot faster, but my IT7 takes around 10~12 seconds.

I never noticed varying booting times until recently though.

4~6 seconds sure is impressive.

it was for me...i was working on it for hours on end....lol..... it was not a clean install either, i have had tons of stuff on.... alot of maintence i had to do and some alterations he and there........ used tweaking programs which can help u eleminate 5 seconds....

My boot time, from pressing button to desktop:

5~6 secs.

Here are some quick tweaks for new installs:
1. Install OS, then defrag
2. Install mobo driver, defrag
3. Install vid driver, defrag
4. Install SP1, defrag.
5. Install other stuff, defrag each step.

Remove norton anything, HUGE startup/shutdown crapper
Remove unncessary startup programs at services and clean up reg files using regedit or a registry cleaup tool

Tweak and edit windows to run leaner, here's a good start

so do you guys reccon it's due to fragmented driver and windows files that windows boot up times are such a variable?
