View Full Version : It is certain now that our flagbearer - the Thoroughbred Core - has been discontinued

Rumours have abounded for a while about this - with no "official" confirmation AFAIK. We all know that the fabled 1700+ was discontinued a while back - well, now the whole T-Bred Core line is done.
Today I went "treasure hunting for steppings" (got on my bike and rode to all the computer stores on the "strip" and asked to look at all their processors) in search of a recent T-Bred "B" 1800+ for a friend. At all the stores I went to (a total of 6) the owner told me that:
"AMD has disontinued them, we are out of stock. The 2000+ is our cheapest AMD CPU now."
Words to that effect anyways. In any case - none of my local stores that move stock fast (which is why they always used to have the newest and greatest stepings in stock) have 1800+ chips anymore. Lo and behold all they have now are Thorton 2000+, etc., and Barton 2500+, etc. processors.
And because all my local stores move stock fast, and have all the latest birthdate processors, all they have now are multiplier locked Bartons, and Thortons with the extra "tamper-proof" packaging that makes unlocking a royal pain to do.
Goodbye Thoroughbred. You will be missed.

GOD, PLEASE SHINE SOME LIGHT ON US AND AMD!!!!!!!!!!!
This, to me, is like the end of the world...of course, it was like that to me when the T-Bird series was discontinued:) . A quote from one of my friends it "let us move on. We should not be weakened by this, but just look forward to the future, and also the present if it's good. So now I must say...let's kick AMD's butt*** off!". Here's what I got to say: Let's just move on to the bartons. Even the 2500+ Barton is close to being as good as the 1700+ T-Bred B (I SAID CLOSE). I'm waiting for mine right now.
Until then, I'm using my 1700+ AXDA DLT3C running at 1710 (i'm using a KT400, so don't ask why such a low speed) multi 10, 1.7 VCore. But i'll never forget the T-Bred's and their loyalty to us OCers (sorry for the sarcasim)...

Agreed (although the Athlon64 is still a possible route if the prices happen to drop).
murrayman - I would love to buy a Barton/Thoton and Overclock the heck out of it - but the new packaging makes it as hard as posible to get at the extra Thorton cache, and the new Bartons are locked. And it seems that the Tortons are locked too. I think you have the right attitude though.

Unless AMD starts dropping prices and stops locking their CPUs this is my last AMD build. 700.00US for a CPU...BAH! I haven't paid that much for my whole pc since my old p3 build.
AMD has always been the cheaper more o/c friendly alternative to Intel but now it seems that has ended. So my time as an AMD person will soon end also.

i got a feeling no matter how much cache they put on the new athlon's, they aren't going to sell unless the price drops and the cpu speed goes up,,,, atleast close to intel,,,
the faster amd is what a 2.2ghz (3200+) , the intel 3.4 ghz are going to the stores as we speak,,,,
i'm gonna laugh real hard when the Pentium 5's come out and get near 5 ghz,,, and amd is still trying to get to 3ghz.... :( :( :(

Why don't we give them a little time. I'm sure the barton prices are going to start to drop. Amd usually isn't full of complete idiots...knock on wood
Reguardless if I had to start buying 2500+ bartons at $85, thats not enough to make me go to a $200+ P4 that is also multilocked. I'm not quite ready to sell out on AMD yet...seeing as how they have "helped" my save money and get ridiculous amounts of performance out of them in the past. Hopefully they'll get things straightened out soon enough.
I'm still pretty confident someone will figure out how to unlock the new Bartons...haven't read much up on the situation lately, but with everything else people have come up with to mods these chips, maybe someone will stumble across another unlock trick
i'm gonna laugh real hard when the Pentium 5's come out and get near 5 ghz,,, and amd is still trying to get to 3ghz.... :( :( :(
I think your going to have a while to wait. And if things remain the same as they have for the past couple of years, and as they look to be continuing with the FX, whats 5ghz if amd 4ghz or less is the equivilent (no these figures aren't accurate  )
Sorry but I hate to condem a good chip/company when we don't have much facts in yet. Just don't want to waste time getting pessimistic I suppose

Locking their CPUs was smart a business move.
Not telling us until after the fact was kinda mean.
Oh well like Ed Strolingo has repeatatly said on the front page, AMD is a for profit business, not our friend.

I HAVE TO WAIT! From the days that I had my first AMD, I was dedicated to them from their on. The only Intels I ever had was an HP Pavilion w/ Celeron 433, EMachine w/Celeron 1400, and a Fujitsu Lifebook i-series w/Celeron 550. One thing I have to say about the Celerons...THEY CAN O-V-E-R-C-L-O-C-K!!!!!!!! Unfortunately, they don't have enough cache and most are 100 FSB based.
I'm still going to wait, but..............my future with AMD is dimming...fast. Things like this with AMD have happened since the day they started. This is nothing new or big, but the ignorance of locking bartons and trashing T-Bred's without a SINGLE WORD!!!!!!
Please pardon my language...please.... DAMN! WHY DID THEY HAVE TO DO THIS ****?????? WHY......why? (I won't say anything like this UNLESS something like this happens, so don't worry)
If my friends ever heard me saying this, they'd flip, but here goes:
So long AMD.....maybe.....hello. . . . .Intel:cry:
PLEASE GUYS, GIVE IT SOME TIME, PLEASE! How's about when they canceled the T-Bird series? Any of you remember that? And how's about during the time of the K6-2 and when they announced they were going to stop production...that hurt. Let me not go into this like if this was the end of the world, but have faith in AMD....just give it some more time.
Hear me out: 2 months ago, we were cussing (not really) about Intel and always saying "AMD RULES!!!". We said we will never leave AMD. We were AMD hooked, like I've never seen. Don't stop now! We would be acting like a bunch of kids.
This maybe just a company and CPU we're talking about, but think about it, OK?????? Just think. . . .
I'll always say: AMD Rules..........even if I go with Intel in the end.
goood bye!!!
and helloo x86-64/barton!

hell yeah fiji!!!
the rest of you make me sick!!!
ya'll trippin!!!! who cares when Intel is @ 5Ghz and amd is at 3.2Ghz. AMD is still going to kick Intels ass (work per cycle). Look at the 64. its 1/3 less clock cycle whips ass on the 3.2. the new EE chip beats the 64 at SOME apps but only by a hair. quit bitchen and save your money now so you can get a 64 this next year.

Exactly - its called progression guys - get over it! Remember everyone was the same when the XP1600 pallies were stopped over a year ago - now look where we are!

Yeah, the Athlon 64 series does look promising. One guy already got a A64 FX-51 and reported to get it from it's stock speed of 2.2Ghz to 2.8Ghz, not to mention it's 64-bit.
Microsoft already agreed to make a patch for the current Windows XP for 64-bit compatibility while they finish their prototype "Longhorn".
One thing that was better than Windows at compatibility with a new type of CPU was something I bet none of you guys remember. Something called "BeOS". Anybody remember???
We already know that the Athlon 64 isn't THAT expensive (listen to what i'm saying, I DON'T EVEN HAVE THAT MUCH...hehe) and the prices will eventually drop...probably when the bartons are canceled too.
Yeah...the future does look good. Wonder how Intel will react? All i've heard was they would respond with...get this...a 11GHZ PROCESSOR!!!!!! I think they're bluffing, but they said they already have it finished and ready to put out in stores.
I guess we'll find out soon..........

well to me it isnt the mhz that sells chips.its the price/performance factor that makes me buy.
sure amd has the price but they just castrated the chip of bandwith with these locks and now its not even able to compete with the P4 line, performance wise.
im a short-term buyer."ie" i buy a mobo for 4 months useage max and 2-3months on cpu's
since i buy and upgrade rather frequently, and i admit it isnt necesary but its my fun/hobby i need the price/performance option at all times.amd just lost that.
1-so that rules out bartons for max price/performance champ imo.
2-intel p4 line is the next step up from that.
3-rule out the A64 as its right on par with the p4 but 2x as much.
4-the fx is insainly high, rule that out completly.
5-EE we dont even need to discuse.
a cpu for me has to be $100-$180 max
can be oced to speeds above anything the company currently offers.
also what makes the price/performance issue with the p4 even stronger is how well they do under air cooling.amd looses more points there as they tend to need more expensive cooling.
thats at the moment tho.will shift with the prescott's tho.
yes amd made a business decision, but they also made a cpu decision for me on what i buy next.
granted i may buy an unlocked barton in 2 weeks, but ill be saving and waiting for prescott's in 1 1/2 months, but has to fit my cpu requirments listed above before i buy that.. A64 is far off from my requirments.
im not whinning amd locked these things,im mad becouse they took my cpu buying plans another way.

I don't think that they castrated them from bandwith as most new Bartons can easily hit over 2400MHz and that will requiere over 218MHz FSB just for 2400MHz, which not every motherboard or RAM can handle. Yes I hate this lock too, as it may prevent some people from getting all out of their RAM, but it will definatly will keep some people from reach max CPU speed as well due to "slow" memory.

Hmmm....I'm upgrading my mom's mobo/CPU/RAM combo this December. I wonder if I should find a cheap T-Bred B and buy it now....

The way I see it price/performance purchase choices for AMD users at the moment are grim - but things will improve drastically when the A64 prices drop - and they will drop soon too. I think that as soon as intel releases a market competitior to the A64 prices will start falling for both the chips, and the motherboards.
I don't need a new computer right now - and my next major upgrade will almost definetely be to a 64-bit platform. Whether it is an intel one, or an AMD one remains to be seen. When it is time to buy, and the market has matured (in other words, not right now) I will chose the best price/performance processor - whether intel or AMD I don't really care.
But AMD has kept me happy untill now, and although the recent choices about locking Bartons, and discontinueing Thoroughbreds were made without informing the public, I am sure things will improve when the 64-bit market becomes standard..

Haha, got my 'B' duron just in time. I guess I'm lucky that I just built my own computer and am only needing non cpu related parts to finish my stepdad's new computer. At least I have some of the best of each processor core, a good palomino, a tbred 'B' duron, and an unlocked barton 2500. I have a k6-2 that did a 15% overclock. I'm only missing a good 'ol tbird to round out my processor line-up. Wait a minute, however. I can still buy palominos, some thunderbirds, and the occasional k6. Don't worry, a large online distibutor ought to have sufficient quantities left over, especially if they have one that production ceased on 1-2 years ago. With the barton, you can always run the memory asynchronously with the fsb. It worked for me. It's not as precise as having it 1:1 with unlocked multiplier, but it will still net you a good overclock. I know I'm not worrying, and you shouldn't either. Availability should be high for probably another 4-5 months now. By then the 64 bit processors should be at more reasonable prices.

What you have to remember is that technology moves on and so does AMD. If AMD does not scrap the XP line all together soon and move on with there 64-bit line, they will surely loose to there competition without any chance.
I am looking forward to a wide range of AthlonFX series CPUs such as the FX-49, FX-51, FX-53, FX-55 and FX-57 all on the Socket 940 setup. Needless to say, I know I wont make a purchase untill AMD migrates to the much more flexable Socket 939 architecture. BUT,, with that said, I cannot see any of this happening if AMD holds on to the already ancient XPs Athlons around.
I got my XP2100+ and its running 2.30GHz fine so I'm happy but now I'm looking for 64-bit and what it has to offer me.
Its time to move on people, and the future looks great for technology.

I doubt it. They will use the excuse of 64 bits to keep prices high. Charge a little more than the market will tolerate. Hey AMD wants to get profitable.
