ok, computer running fine til i tried to boot at 1000mhz at 2.05 volts.
windows screen came up and went off, then puter said windows did not detect a hard drive.
tried 2 more times no luck. each time, my hard drive makes 3 scratching noises over and over.
went into bios at startup by hitting f1 during bootup and it says 0 mb. detected.
tried to boot from restoration disk but said no hard drive detected.
its probably fried huh?
its a couple months old. 46.5gb ibm deskstar 7200rpm. willnot detect drive even at stock mhz/voltage. how else can i tell if its fried or not?
restoration disk would not even let me re-install windows.
stock gateway mobo 2xagp 200fsb slot-a
all cables are tight and clean.
help please!

Core voltage should have no effect upon HDD's. It's possible that the slight bump in Memory Bus freq messed things up.

However, it's more likely that your particular 45 Gb 75GXP DTLA went South on you. 'Fraid that IBM made some lemon 45 Gb 75GXP's. It looks like trying to load and use IBM's HDD diagnostic prog won't work. It's time to RMA the drive. Get an RMA # from the retailer. If the retailer no longer covers the HDD, get the RMA # from IBM. Bad luck, old chap.

damn. thanx bro :)
about 2 months ago i fried 2 other hdd that were the same as this one but they were 20gigs. also my L2 cache is at 1/3, do u think it could be something with my mobo causing it?

the noise your refering to sound like the heads have touched the platters if the drive constantly seeks fair chance you have bad sectors.
Only cure for this is never move the PC while its turned on, the heads only sit microns from the platters and even the slightest bump can trash a drive.
Excessive voltage from the PSU would more than likely kill the motor so you would get nothing at all.
hmmmm....If the BIOS is detecting the drive and reading 0 Mb could be firmware as well.

well thanx guys for the info.
i called gateway and they are sending me ANOTHER one lol.
just out of curiosity, how hard is it to repair a drive with this problem.
they always want u to send the bad one back so they must fix it somehow right?

I had the same prob on an old Intel Snaileron system, I was fsb OCing, suddenly, when I rebooted, no HDD. It never worked again. It wouldn't even spin up or anything.

Check out your PSU and then look at my system

I orginally had a 250 watt psu generic crap when i upgraded from a 600 slot a to a 900 t-bird slot a strange things started to happen. My temps were high , my hdd would lock out and stutter. Eventually i think the psu was totally fried and i went to comp usa and bought the aopen 300 watt which has a huge fan in the back. This decreased my temps and solved all my problems. If i were you i would flash you bios again even if you have the newest one and replace the PSU the same time. If you cant get into dos use a boot disk or buy another HDD and flash the bios with the good HDD and then put in the old HDD and see what happens . Just go to comp usa or best buy they have a 15 day no questions money back gurrantee
Oh yeah you are just asking for trouble when putting the the GFD to 2.05 volts! On my GFD i was having problems with 1.9 volts and my psu, so unless you have water cooling forget it. 1.85 is the voltage requried to run 1000mhz on the slot a anyway

Gerry member when i said upgrade the PS- you shold have ..lol i had the SAME XACT prob boot up and 0mb in BIOS, and also no HD detedted of an a: of b: drive error. just power down and unplug the plug that goes to the board , plug it back in and try to boot-if that dont work just clear the cmos with the mumper and do it again-might have to otry it a few times -but usually i get it on 2x tries- with that mych voltage you PS cant ahndle it and drops to low and causes problems. When you get back up itll say CMOS Display settings bad or dome crap just ESC into setup and redo the settigns0then f10 to save i think and u should be ok

That's good news. As it is - I have boxes upon boxes of gubbins that I'll never give up on.

Too many people perhaps throw away their things too quickly.
