View Full Version : [SOLVED] 1g AXIAR @1.43 A BIT STRANGE!

Yesterday I bought a 1G AXIAR-Y 266 CPU at the local show, ($85.00) When I installed it I couldn't get it to post. No POST, no beeps, nothing. I tried this chip in three different boards at default settings after clearing the CMOS, an A7V, A7V133 and an AD11 DDR. This chip wouldn't work for anything.

This morning I exchanged it for another one. When I got home late this evening I had another go at it with the new one. Same thing! I then installed other CPU's in these same boards and they worked fine! From a couple of DURON 600's to my 1.2AXIA, these CPU's worked at default as well as overclocked (600's @ 1100 and the 1.2 @ 1.4) no problems. By the way, both this chip and the first one are locked. After giving it some thought I figured I might as well unlock it, I used a pencil just to see what would happen (I've used both pencil and rear window defogger with good results in the past). Bingo! POST at default, ran a benchmark on it and everything's fine. I gave it a few minutes and started bumping it up to see what I could get out of it. Two hours later I'm stable at 1.43G, with no POST over 1.5G.

If this would have happened on just one board I could blame it on the board, but I tried three different boards from two different manufacturers with different chipsets as well.

Has anyone else see this "quirk" with these CPU's before? It's new to me.

Research, the key to a successful overclocking experience!

Try burning it in for a while. It's always worth a shot

I'm not complaining about the 43% overclock that I am able to get. I'm just curious about the circumstances that I ran into to get the CPU to boot in the first place.

Well with air cooling you are getting to the end of that chips limits. I have yet to hear much about your stepping code. What is your default voltage? I have experianced that the 200mhz FSB 1giggers go higher than the 266mhz FSB. Correct me if I am wrong though. I have worked real hard to see 1.5 from this 1gigger. I have posted at 1620mhz (12x135mhz) but my temps are too high for my taste (54c). Maybe when I get better ram I will see 1.6 at a lower temp. The saga continues!!

I bet you have some small short on the L1's and it would not boot and when you cleaned and unlocked it the short was removed and everything worked fine. that is the only thing I can think of.

Well, on a brand new chip, that shouldn't be the case. An unmodified chip should work right out of the box (or tray, whatever, you know what I mean). But hey, it runs.

I got a 1 GHz AXIA-Y this weekend... I'm still trying to get Win2K loaded on my new HDD that I got (jumping from Win98). As soon as I get to some overclocking I'll post some results.

Nice chip dood, that puppy should hit 1.4-1.5 pretty easy with good cooling, but as with your other boxes you have that covered, I look forward to your results.

So far I'm at 1150 with no voltage or noticable temp increase....

:)

1400 here I come.

perhaps you just hav a old board which didn't recognise it

The 1 GHz chips of the good steppings are where it's at, bro. Cheap as all he!! (under $100 if you know where to look) and many have cores that are the exact same as their 1.2 and 1.3 GHz brothers.

Ran up my chip tonight, did a quick test to see what it would do (1 GHz AXIA-Y, 266 FSB). Got it to 1375 stable with no voltage increase. Got it into Windows at 1400 but my temp alarms went off immediately. DANG!! Time for that SK6, methinks. I bet my chip does 1.5..... hopefully....

I don't know if you were talking to me, but if you are, no, I have a KT7A-Raid.

If you get a 266 MHz FSB chip, just connect the L1's (pencil trick) and lower the FSB and raise the multiplier and it should work just fine.

**UPDATE** Doh, I'm sorry, I see you were talking to Frank about the mobo. Sorry for any confusion.

Yeah, I used to put all my info down there, but seriously, my stuff changes too often and I got sick of changing my sig every time I change my overclock.

It's much more fun to put something goofy in there that I dont have to change 4 times a day.
