I've tested my PC with Sygate and it says that port 8 is open. It's ICMP I think. Is this a big deal? I cannot figure out how to close it. Or should I even bother?

Port 8 isn't icmp. Icmp doesn't use ports.

There isn't a common service that uses port 8 either.

So it's not a big deal then?

well any service can bind to a port

so what service is it?

most likely not a big deal, but i know close to nothing about networking so take it as a grain of salt

I don't know what service it is. That's why I'm asking. I guess I'm not going to worry about it for now then.

I'm just saying it isn't icmp. You should still worry about it, normal Windows installations don't listen for anything on port 8 and there isn't a standard service that uses that port.

Test your pc with something else and see what you get. If I remember, you are behind a clarkconnect firewall, so I wonder how this sygate is reporting this so called open port 8. dslreports.com and grc.com have port scans, try them. I think symantec.com has a scan thing as well.

i think nessus does scans by service and not port...

maybe check it out

I've tested my PC now with a few different ones. Symantic was one and they all come back fine. So I guess I'm not really gonna worry about it.

Have any of you scanned your system with Sygate to see if you get similiar results with port 8?

Thanks guys
