View Full Version : Guess what I just had sex with....
....My backup computer, I f^ck&d it good. I got some cheap thermal compound and decided to test it on my K6II before using it with my Duron. My K6II was a box chip with sink & fan already on the chip. I've never seen a K6II without the sink. First thing I did was separate the sink from the aluminum cap on the chip, no problem. Next I separated the cap from the actual chip, problem. Not knowing what was underneath I was haphazard in my use of the knife. I chunked up and tore a hell of a whole lot on the chip top. Nothing was completely severed but a few surface... resistors or whatever they are... were dangling. I eased them back into place, smoothed the sink as best I could and PRESTO! It still works!!! And only at a 50mhz reduction in speed!!! This was not a good day.
I don't have a question for this, this is just venting.
Thank you.
that cap you took of is not meant to be taken of. Its there for a reason. I have doubts it'll last a week. And your thread title is a bit risky.

Usually, that cap can be removed and it helps with cooling. Obviously though you need to be gentle and not damage anything that is underneath the cap.

Sadly I had never seen a K6II without the cap so I didn't know haw far I could dig under the cap with my knife without damaging it. Hindsight is 20/20. Still, it still works (at a reduced speed) which I'm assuming means I haven't destroyed anything on the chip top. Hopefully when I get a machineist to lap it (sink) for me instead of the low quality flattening I did it will run as fast as it did previously, hopefully.

I took the cap off of mine but I used some lighter fluid to break up the glue and it came off just fine and OCd 50 mhz. just got some as2 today ill do some temp testing if anybody is interested???
nice title for a topic :-)

Yes, yes I am interested. I'm gonna actually try to do a quality lapping job on my sink and put a lapped british pence between the chip and sink myself to see if I can get it back up to previous speed. I did a real crappy job the first time (although carving the living hell out of the top of the chip doesn't help either). I'd post temp results if I could but my K6II board doesn't have a built in sensor and I don't have an independent probe either so I'd like to see what results you get.

I was not in a good state of mind when I did that, for reasons the text of my post explains. Perhaps it wasn't the best choice of words but I look at it as a positive thing in so much that it would have been worse had I taken the other route and vented by hurling my computer off my 7th floor balcony into the street below. Still, to those it offended (it can't be too many have you noticed how many chose to read it) I appologize.
Your topic certainly got my attention, but it's probably not a very good choice of words.
