I am looking for a simple software app to setup a server on my home computer. something that will display html pages and such.

apache
cant remember the addy right now, but use google, and it will be top. Dead easy to setup, install it, then find httpd.conf, and set your root directory to where you store the content (in two places, take your time, it is all explained).
I use it for my webserver, though at the moment, just content and no html pages.

Agreed. Even a hosting n00b like myself set it up without a problem. Here is a little guide to help you out if you get stuck: Apache Install Guide . Good luck!

Search for Apache Conf if you are really lazy. Its a program that, you gussed it, helps configure Apache for you,
