View Full Version : TBird 266MHz FSB on 200MHz FSB motherboards?
Hi,
I'm thinking about upgrading my TBird 850 to something higher. My motherboard is the Abit KT7 (which can only do 200MHz FSB). Will a 266 FSB Athlon work with this m/b? If it does I will get a 266 Athlon now and then upgrade to a 266 m/b at a later time.
Thanks.

As long as the multiplier is unlocked it should work fine.
To get the performance that you pay for you will want to up the multiplier to compensate for the lower fsb. For a 1Ghz CPU you will want 10x instead of a 7.5x, 1.2Ghz you will want 12x instead of 9x, etc.

But remember to keep sight of the maximum multiplier fo the motherboard (12.5x ?)

I'd check into an updated BIOS - I know that 1.4 GHz Tbirds exist in an **official** 200 MHz FSB speed, so I imagine Abit's newest BIOSes include support for higher multipliers. But you should be OK otherwise. Just pencil in those L1's, raise the multiplier, and you're good to go.
