Hello, i'm building a new system and plan on buying a DVD writer for it, now i'm thinking either NEC DVD-RW/DVD+RW ND-1300 IDE (OEM) for aprox. 165$ , or Sony DVD-RW/DVD+RW DRU-510A IDE (RETAIL) for aprox. 290$, the main plus for sony is +- compatability, but the price is a bit steep, is it realy worth it? Any help would be welcomed...
(feel free to suggest other drives as well)
I'd say that in the price range of the NEC, go for the Pioneer A06 (called 106 in OEM version). It is a dual format burner. (the NEC 1300A is dual format too actually) I'd say that the Pioneer is better than that sony.
If your budget is up to $290, then get the Plextor 708. It can burn +R at 8x, +RW at 4x, -R at 4x, -RW at 2x.
but if you wait a little bit, then for $300, you should be able to get the newly released Pioneer A07, which burns both +R and -R at 8x, and +RW and -RW at 4x.
edit:
the Plextor 708 is on sale now at Newegg for just $215! http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&manufactory=1323&catalog=5&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1
you can get the Pioneer for $131 from newegg: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&manufactory=1167&catalog=5&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1
