compaq dvd rom trouble

I recently upgraded the mobo on a compaq computer. When I did the dvd and cdrw drives quit working. I replaced the drives but would like to get them working in another computer. The dvd drive will open and accept a disk but cant read it the cdrw drive does not respond at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :(

Is there no way to fix this problem? Do I need to post more information?

Could a firmware upgrade possibly fix this problem or is the drive dead because of the motherboard upgrade? Has anyone else had this trouble when upgrading a compaq?
