i pencilled my duron 750 with a simple graphite pen. but i just tried, how to overclock, then i went with the default speed. after three months, i wanted to overclock it again, and the bios didn't allow me to change the multiplier!
after this, i re-pencilled the l1 bridges. that was 2-3 months before.
now, the thing resets itself randomly, or crashes, bluscreen, etc. is that the graphite again? or what?
and how to cool the proc down (42°C idle), when the room temp is 30-34 degs?! (with fop32) i don't want a water block.

I've heard of this problem before. Somehow the graphite from the pencil wears away off the bridges. For a more permanent fix you could try some rear window defrosting stuff.

good luck

I agree with above, I used pencil trick in the beginning, but I think the heat messes with the graphite, I went to NAPA and got the de-fogger kit ($8) and used a sewing pin to apply it, works awesome now.

I have a theory that the heat causes the graphite to oxidize to Carbon Dioxide which has strong electrical bonds and doesn't like to share its electrons. Heat would accelerate the process. That is my thoughts on the subject. :)

Sounds like a good experiment with a writeup for the front page... hint hint.

If I try that stuff is it easy to remove if I don't get it lined up right? If so what would I need to clean that stuff off? I like the idea of pencil because if I screwed up I could redo it without much effort but it looses appeal if I have to keep redoing it.

I would use the pencil thing first until you get it right then go to the more premanent fix, that is what I did and I felt better knowing that I could change my markings easier with a pencil.

well, many answers, thanks. i just wonder, if this is really my problem? when the graphite wears off (anyway), causes this wearing-off resets and freezes?! have you heard that?
or something else is wrong? i changed nothing, really.
hmm, i think, i could solder these bridges, but then i really loose the warranty. (coz soldering is easy, but removing it cluelessly from such a small surface, is impossible)
i'm trying to sell this stuff, coz i heard (and i experienced!), abit boards are somewhat buggy: i tried different geforce2 cards (elsa, asus, noname), and they did not work at all: the screen remained black, and there was no post at all. i heard, that's a common problem with abit boards (at least, with k7 boards)
but what to buy? i don't want to change to ddr, coz it's expensive and not much faster. so i can only choose the kt133a chipset, which is also very buggy (as i heard, and read hear)
and i also want a 1gig/266 athlon: the performance is enough for everything, and it's not so expensive.
okay, but i stay by my current problem: these lockups. if anyone has an idea, how to find out, what causes this, please send me a mail, or answer here. this graphite-thing was just my idea.
bye!
