View Full Version : Is it better to buy a 1Gz and overclock than a 1.4Gz and not overclock?
I am curious. The newer T-bird processors have the blue core am I correct? Or its the green core. Anyways the CPU's with the good core are the ones where you can connect the L1 bridges to unlock overclocking. Now my curiosity lies it the question, does AMD package and ship a 1.4 Gz CPU with the same exact everything as a 1 Gz CPU but the only difference is that the clock speeds? So basically the overclock the CPU themselves without connecting the L1 bridges and, viola you have a 1.4 Gz processor. The reason I ask is that im thinking of buying a new CPU and if a 1Gz which is cheaper, and is the same as a 1.4 Gz arcitecturally, then why pay more money when I can overclock it and buy better cooling suches.

There is improvements in the 1.4's core. Most ppl seam to hit a ceiling at 1.5GHz with a 1GHz AXIA when overclocking. I ahve a 1.33 AXIA and can hit 1.55 or 1.6 with relative ease. Ppl with 1.4 seems to do even better. So I assume it does have some improvements. Most 1.3 and 1.4 are unlocked as well. I haven't heard of anybody with alocked one. I'm not sure what the status of the 1 GHz's are.
Pending on the price difference, I will go for the 1.4. It gives you the option to go higher in the future.

Not even a month ago I would have said go for the 1Ghz w/o any hesitation. But now processor prices have fallen so much that you might as well get a 1.4Ghz.
Although the steppings have improved with the 1.4Ghz, the percentage overclock is far lower than the 1Ghz. With the 1Ghz you can expect upto 60-70% increase. With the 1.4Ghz you can expect 15-20%.
how dare you ask the question! not overclocking is a sin. if you are new to overclocking get the 1ghz for cheap. if you need a faster chip get the 1.4 and overclock it too.

if yoiu really don t wanna OC that 1.4 get the 1 gig then cause itll be a faster FSB due to the overclock a 1gig @1.4 will be faster than a default 1.4 due to theFSB thats if you up it from 133
Realy you are way better off with the 1.4 becuse you have no chance of instability at a stock setting,The 1gig cranked up will suffer a posible instability if you are pushing for speeds up to or above 1.4,,,,,
Also I would hit the 1.4 with a high fsb and a lower multiplyer,This wil ensure no little 1 gig can compete LOL.....
Depnds how pricing is, I havent looked lately. Usually get the highest you can afford. I've never bought the highest MHZ available of anything because I feel they are overpriced and yer paying for hype. I usually shoot for the middle of the road.

if u have money i would have gone for a 1.33 since its the same as the 1.4ghz. With an 1.33 u are sure to get axia or ayhja but with the 1.4 u will get an ayhja.
If u buy a 1ghz it is in most cases locked but 1,2ghz and up are unlocked so u dont need to do the pencil trick.
+ the 1ghz are in most cases older stepping so u might not hit more than 1.1-1.2ghz. i got an 1.1ghz (avha) stepping wich only hits 1320mhz and is locked........ go for an 1.33 or an 1.4
just get an 1.2ghz+ so u dont need too unlock it to overclock
It depends on you really...
If you like OCing, get a 1.0 or 1.2ghz, and OC as far as you can go.
But, if you'd rather leave everything alone, buy that 1.4.
Cooling matters too...if you dont have/dont intend to buy a good HSF unit, then get a 1.4--OCing from 1ghz tbird will probably require you to bump the voltage (which = more heat)

The 1ghz procs are not the same as the 1.4's (and some 1.33's) go to athlon oc (http://www.athlonoc.com) and read their article abot the ahyja stepping. it made some changes that are not found in the axia or any other stepping, and is only found on the 1.33 and 1.4 athlons.
I would get the 1.33 or 1.4, their pretty much the same and overclock the same. If you are low on cash get the 1ghz proc.
