Whats a good temperature to be running my 3.0 Ghz P4? I've got it running around 60 C. Its been running at 100% for about 45 minutes with Folding@home. Its up to 62 C now. Is this something I should be worried about?

By the way, I just set this up and I'm not overclocking yet. I want to know where I stand now. Actually I had to change the fan settings already to get it to run stable.

Also whats a good monitoring program? I'm using SpeedFan now.

Are u sure? my P4 3.0ghz 800fsb is running at 32 celcius idle and 40 celcius max load on stock cooling.
Motherboard reports as 19 celcius idle and 38 celcius max load but this mobo reads 9 c off

Also run toms hardware clocker, to find the actualy speed of the cpu...
If the the program reports ur cpu speed to be anything less than 2.9ghz, that means the proccessor has underclocked itself from overheating which means u need better cooling...If it dosent and its still at 3ghz, then maybe ur mobo is reporting wrong temps

Where can I find toms hardware clocker? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Is this related to toms hardware guide? I wasn't able to find it there.

The temperature does seem high maybe it is a mobo problem. I'll try flashing the bios, which I havn't done yet.

Download it from http://mysite.verizon.net/vze1r2ht/tgh_clock.exe

First play a game or heavy CPU intensive task, after 2 minutes with that application still running, run tgh_clock.exe
If tgh_clock says your cpu speed is below 3ghz, then it has throttle iteself down meaning u need better cooling

Thanks. I ran that and it says 3007. I assume thats right. I think the temp is just being reported as wrong. Unfortunantly the mother board website is down so I can't update the bios yet.

What is your motherboard?
Abit are known to read temps TOO high
Asus are known to read temps TOO low especially with the P4P800 series.

If it isnt throttling at 60 degress, WHICH IT SHOULD, then your mobo is definetly reporting wrong temps. I would buy a probe and monitor it like Compunurse or Doc comp.

my system has the temps above, these readen from my nexus multipanel which i think is more reliable than the mobo...

60C is not in the throttling range. It's more like 70-75C.

While that is a distrubingly high number, if you're stable you're fine. However, I wouldn't try to go overclocking with that as a starting point.

What HSF and TIM are you using?

According to Intel 75 celcius is when the proccessor dies..correct me if iam wrong

I beleive that's correct, butP4s should never die due to heat - they should throttle themselves down before it becomes a factor.

Thats what i said that when a p4 hits 60, it throttles down lol

60 is when my MOBO alarm is suppose to go off. I would think that would take up any cooling in the case and rasie the temp to make other things suffer. Like memory, power supply, video card, etc. But I think that your motherboard is just reading the temp a little high. I use gigabyte software to monitor my temps.

I guess, on my retail box package it says thermal something something of 75 w I THINK..iam not sure

Well, I guess I'll give up the details. First off I have no immediate plans to overclock this system. Its just if I'm having trouble with fans, heat and cpu speeds, this seems to be a place with knowledgeable people. Right now, I'm just trying to get it stable at my processors speed.

My case is a small form factor barebones PC. The motherboard is specific for the case, but it does have features like clock speed, PCI multiplier and fan settings in the bios. The system is a Shuttle SB61G2. (http://www.us.shuttle.com/specs2.asp?pro_id=283) The main board is a Shuttle FB61, which uses the Intel 865G, and ICH5 chipsets.

Probally the most important bit is the CPU cooling system. It uses a heat pipe system. There is a fan on the vertical part of the heat pipe system which which blows air through the heat sink and then out of the back of the case. This is supposed to be a low noise, high preformance 80mm fan. It doesn't list an airflow, but it does read 2.6w on the fan. There is not enough room above the processor to fit the heatsink that can with the retail processor.

The computer has run stable at 3.0 Ghz in every test I've done when the fan is configured to be full on. The thing I'm concerned about is the high temperatures (60C) being reported. I'm hoping to change the fan settings to reduce noise, but I want to know where I stand first.

ughh barebones.....ughh shuttle...
You should have instead bought a motherboard, the proccessor, and a case....

For a shuttle system that reads about 10C high if not mistaken of what I've seen on other boards. Not to bad.

Whats wrong with a shuttle system Heatsinkguy? They are perfectly fine and great for Lan Parties/Traveling with it since its so small.

But they are weak compare to asus and abit

They don't preform as well but I mean look how small and light they are. :)
