View Full Version : What would happen if 3dfx came back?
Well, at looking at the other thread about Diamond making their return....what would u all do if 3dfx comes back?????
Came back as a 3rd party manufactuer to nVidia or ATi (like Diamond), or came back and started designing their own GPUs again?
Designing their GPU's again...... They would not really be starting from scratch, if they had all their research from when they were still making their GPU's they wouldn't be at a total loss...

Yet more questions...qould it be like a VisionTek to GFB Tech thing, where its the same employees just a different name, or would it actually be the 3Dfx name?
The reason i ask is because if its the actual 3Dfx name, they will have access to all their old tech, and any of nVidia's new tech, because nVidia owns the company (though its not an esablished one anymore).
If the old 3Dfx employees quit where they are working now, and reform under a new name (like BFG Tech did when VisionTek went under), then they wouldnt be on nVidia's chain, but they also wouldnt have access to any old technology (nor would they be able to impliment any of it because nVidia owns the patents)
Mmmmm...good point, i say rename to another name :).... It would not take the employees long to think of something, remember they are part of Nvidia :P.....
And they're part of ATi, and they are part of Matrox too...once 3Dfx broke up their employees got scattered all over the market, hehe
LOL...ok then...new employees :P

I would tend to wonder who the 3dfx name, trademark, and logo are property of nowadays - it's nVidia, if I remember right... so anyone thinking to start "3dfx" all over again (under that name) would have to purchase them from nVidia.
But even then, the 3dfx name would be the only thing likening the old company and the "new" company. You'd have name recognition, but would essentially need to develop the company from the ground up. Branding, though, does command a lot of attention - just look at how Diamond has gotten attention in the past few weeks, announcing it is entering the video card market again. Neeless to say, the names "Diamond," "Stealth," and "Viper" are the only similarities between the old company and new...

3dfx wont happen again but they can just build a new company with a different name but unfortunately lack the funds. when 3dfx was sold to Nvidia, it wasnt worth much since 3dfx was losing so much and they are a small company too. also the employees are scattered around, some working for nvidia or ati

The rights to the 3dfx name were sold to Nvidia, so it can't happen with the same name.
Ok, so a different company name then :P
Well, if they would start from the ground up, how about 2dfx? Hehe :D

I think nVidia should use the 3dFX name as their retail company... making their own cards for consumers... the name is worth alot alone...

And then release a Voodoo Fx 10000 Ultra super ultimate killer assasain commando ninja Pro which would be a card only half as fast as the VooDoo Fx 9800 Ultra Pro! :D :D
Right after that of course, a regular Voodoo Fx 50 would come out which would obliterate every other 4D FX or 2D FX (fill in the blank here) product.

Since when is any new company started out of the owners own pockets? Loans are how every new company starts (or the majority at least)
