Could AMD have locked the processor so everyone will go out and buy new NF2 400fsb and Via KT400A (is that the one that does 400 FSB) motherboards to get very high FSB. Also to get to high FSBs you need to have very high speed memeory. And becasue you need 433/466 RAM the memeory manufacturers can charge an arm and a leg. This forces eveyone to buy new computers, instead of bumping up the multiplier on their Kt266/Kt133/AMD 750 boards to compensate for low FSB. See everyone wins in the end except the consumer.

I think the main reason was to prevent people modding Barton 2500+s and selling them off as 3000+s etc.

You have a point, I still stick to my opinion though. Alot more money wil be moved on my theory than on rebadged processors.

Since overclockers make a tiny fraction of the CPU market, this makes no sense bulk88.

Average consumer is unaffected because they run at stock speeds. A few percent of consumers will be affected - the overclockers.

Whoever was remarking chips and selling them at profit and whoever was overclocking chips and selling them as parts in higher rated systems for profit is to blame primarily, not some conspiracy.

People at the forums here forget that as far as the vast majority of computer users are concerned, this is the response: "overclocking, what's that?"

Good tabloid news atleast.:D

Or, "overclocking!!?"

Followed by "You are going to burn your house down", or "You are going to wreck your computer", or "The components aren't made to run above spec".

At least that is my experience with the reactions of mainstream computer users ;)

Another thing to remember is that most people are buying nForce 2 boards these days anyways as they are fairly new and mainstream right now for AMD XP based computers.

thats 100% ture.

little know fact!
Late Pentium 133 were All locked. (cant remeber the sspec)
as too many people were remarking them as 166's..
and that very same reaon is why all intel CPU's are locked today. REMARKING of CPUS

then why don't they include a software modifieable multiplier? I might as well patch the bios to print a higher speed on the POSt screen.

lol! Of course not! Nothing is made to run above spec! Somethings specifications are what it's made to run at...

Sorry, I just got a big kick out of that one.

What is overclocking? LOL

Like most things we all like to and demand more performance for any product we purchase .An example is car engines we tinker with exhaust out flows carb or injector setups all to one purpose more performance.Cpus are no different we play with voltage multiplier and cooling set ups to squeeze every ounce of speed and or performance .As for specs a nice guideline but so what . :D

Hmm. The way i see it, most people who know that Bartons have recently become locked, woudln't really be shopping for lower end boards than the kt400's or nf2's. Mainstream users wouldn't know the difference anyway.

So, i do not see how this change is expected to affect mobo sales more than just a tiny percent (if any). Lets just ask, how many people around here were shopping for a kt333 or older board and decided to get an nf2 because the barty's are being locked?

Hmm. that makes no sense to me. Perhaps i'm just missing your point?

My lil' point, if it matters, is that anyone who's buying a barty to o/c it will be looking for a 400mhz board allready. How has this changed?

I was talking about upgrading your kt333 or kt266 boards.
