HI. I'm currently an intel guy, but thats just cause I happened to have a brother that was. now in my desire for a faster cpu(I've not heard to many good things about p4's) I'm debating whether or not to go with AMD. Looking to get to about 1.5. o/c or not. I'd rather o/c cause I want an excuse for a water cooler(I'm a sucker for these kinds a things:))Kinda going through the forum. and looking back and browsing the web, but was wondering what the seems to be popular combos right now. Also do AMD's use the same memory as Intel(I'm a COMPLETE AMD novice). Thanks for any help/suggestions you may have.

I confess that I am not yet an AMD guy, only because I haven't built one yet. I just wanted to welcome you to the forum, if nobody has yet, and to suggest that you check out the CPU Database on the main page. Most of the CPU listings have also listed the Motherboard, and it is a good starting place.

I'd say that the best combo would be a 1.33ghz athlon and an epox 8k7a ddr mobo. They use the same memory.

Mad hatter a better combo would be 1.33Ghz with Asus A7A266 for him...since he has Intel cpu and i am guessing PC133 ram...so this board has 5Dramslots 2 for DDR and 3 for SD so his ram can be used with both for now till he decides to put some more money in for DDRam its a good choice and i am hearing its awome for overclocking......i am not sure if the board u sudguessted is SD and DDR capible.. for an idea its 209+TAX (CDN)

let me just say that you are in the right place d00d... I had a celly II that I had running at 927 when I got a deal to swap my 6x DVD and full tower case for a Slot A Tbird and a Gigabyte 7IXE. I consulted oc.com for ideas, and now its running at 945! I am now a slightly seasoned AMD guy. But still a novice on AMD.
Same memory? Assuming you want to use what you've already got in a celeron or pIII board then yes but if you gave a p4 a try, didn't like it and then went to AMD you'd need different memory from what's in the p4. P4s take rambus memory only, at least all of the ones I've heard of.
Celeron /pIII - Athalon: keep your old memory (if you get the right board).
Celeron /pIII - P4: more $ spent on rambus memory. AMDs looking better and better isn't it?

An Epox 8K7A mobo will certainly not use the same kind of ram as his Intel Setup. I would guess that you are using PC-133 or PC-100 memory. If your using PC-100 then your gonna have to get new memory since all chipsets use 133 Mhz fsb now. As cheap as memory is right now you might as well buy a motherboard that uses DDR memory such as the Epox 8K7A, you could get 256 megs of Crucial PC-2100 DDR which is very good for a little less that 50 bucks. DDR motherboards are going to offer better performance than motherboards that use PC-133 memory. If you do want to keep your PC-133, assuming you have that, than the Abit KT7E or KT7A would both work. The KT7E is allegedly a 100 Mhz chipset, but ive never heard of someone not getting less than about 140 Mhz. The KT7A might be a little better.
