I just got myself an Athlon 1 Ghz (AXIA 9) and I tried unlocking the multiplier with a pencil. Now the trick works coz I get to boot and run at 10 x 147 which is awesome but the minute I turn off my PC and wait for about 10 minutes and on it back again, it doesnt work anymore. Therefore, I will need to clear the CMOS and the set it again and it works fine again !. Can anyone tell me why is this happening and what am I suppose to do ?. By the way, Im running it on the MSI K7T Turbo LE. Whats a conductive pen and how does it look like ?. Can anyone name me some ?. Thank you guys !

Sounds like you have a motherboard problem, if it post once OK, it is not your pencil trick, I have been running mine for almost 4 months now. Have you gotten the new BIOS for that board? ver 2.8?

I have heard of the pencil trick doing that if you dont have enough graffite on it. Make sure the heat is ok as well.

I have downloaded the latest BIOS release (Ver 2.8) but the problem still persists. I tried unlocking the bridges like 20 times but it still doesnt help. Do you think that the custom overclocking bios will run with my K7T Turbo LE ?. And by the way, whats the advantage of using the 'High Performance Setting' in the BIOS ?.

I do think the O/C BIOS will work with yours, refresh my memory, do you have the KT-133a chipset?

Yes, I am using KT133A chipset but I am afraid that I'll screw the whole thing up when I flash it. Any chance to recover if I happen to complicate things ?

make sure the ram can handle the fsb... voltage possibly too... that happened to me a few times... but only because i was playing with the settings...
dont go too high.... and you will be fine...

mine worked well for 2 months then everytime i turned of this crap i would just get a black screen no post or anything. The thing i had to do is too take out the cpu run it without till i got an NO cpu beep and then put it back in. Didnt have to do that everytime i turned off but more often for every day....
At the end it was like everytime i turned of or pressed the reset button and it wouldnt even help with taking the cpu out. Wouldnt even beep without the cpu anymore, had to take the battery out an leave it for a whole night to get a post back. No help in setting the speed manualy with dip switches or anything, tried default setting but no luck. and those CRAP asus ppl forgot to put a cmos clearing pin on it. It only had ONE connection so i couldnt even use a screwdriver to shortcut them. No i have given up and im running back on default 11x100:(((((( mobo is asus a7v133

Did you make sure to not touch bridges with the pencil? That may be the whole problem. Also, did you up the vcore voltage? That can cause that too.

Yes you can, on a floppy make sure you have your old bios and your new bios. And you will need the AwardsBIOS, or whatever bios mfg you use bios flash utility on that same disk.

Thanks Trancebear but what if it happens so that I cant boot up at all after I flash the bios ?. My friend had once experienced flashing his BIOS but once he resetted, nothing appears on the screen and it cant even start at all. Any chance to recover ?.

You are getting into an area that I am not a pro on, I have flashed my BIOS several times and I find it not that difficult, but to a novice it can be avery scary, I would read EVERYTHING that your BIOS mfg. has to say about doing this.
this thing work not on every mobos (bioses), but if you have no chance to recover, then it worth a try!
first, make 2 clean boot disks(!) it must be floppy disk, it doesn't work with harddisks!!!
then copy the files needed to flash your bios onto one of the floppies.
then run the bios writer program, and choose to save a copy of your current bios! BUT DON'T flash it yet! copy this backup image to the other floppy (this is the rescue disk)
some bioses CAN boot from FLOPPY, even if the bios is cleared. the reason: the flash writer doesn't write into the area, where this floppy boot up program is stored. and don't forget: this works only with 1.44mb 3.5" floppy drives!!! so, in many cases, you can boot from the floppy, but you won't see a thing on the screen, coz the other parts of the bios (vga driver) are damaged.
so make an autoexec.bat file onto the rescue disk, which calls the flash writer utility, and passes the parameters to it. you must pass the backup image as the new bios, and every other parameter, coz you can't use the keyboard.
then flash your bios. if it fails, try to boot from the rescue floppy. perhaps it works.
but don't take this as a general cure on this problem, i say: it DOESN'T WORK ON ALL MOTHERBOARDS/BIOSES!!!
first, try to get info from the manufacturers.
i did some bios flashes before, not all were succesful... :)
