I'm looking for something that'll hit anywhere from 2.0-2.2ghz on low voltages. It's for my mom. Excaliberpc.com is still selling the same CPU in my sig, but that at $65. Is the sure bet worth it today, with all the odd CPU happenings right now?

Should I just try my luck with newegg on an 1800?

What say you?

I'm building a cheap rig for my mother, as I said. So I'll probably look into a Soltek board to match this up to. I may even look to get some decent RAM, which would get us into the 200FSB range. Now with that we would even have to worry about multipliers.

get it from ebay. I got my 1800 DLT3C JIUHB for $53 after shipping. Always ask for stepping code before buying. If the selling won't provide, dont buy.

You should get the Duron 1600MHz, its about $40 and with an easy L2 mod, you'll get your cache back for a whole true, AthlonXP1900+ which is super cheap and is very OCable

But is the L2 cache a sure bet? I thought many people were not have success at all.

I personally did it and it worked, on my Applebred A (Tbred-A based). Yeah I know I got a ****in Tbred-A based proc. Just rememeber you need to expose the bridges by scratching them away, also you need to fill the hole or avoid it.

Well that's another problem then, isn't it? A T-Bred A just won't do. I'm seriously considering the guaranteed stepping at excaliber now, considering a Duron is anything but a sure bet. Now only is the L2 cache not guaranteed, but also the core in the first place. I think I read a thread her about a NEW Duron based on the Palomino core. Hmmm....

I'm thinking either the excaliber 1800 or even a Barton 2500 and taking my chances on the FSB.

Now there's a guaranteed Thorton 2400 at newegg for $75. The pictured product has a week 43.

compgeeks.com sells the 1700+ DLT3C for $39. Used though, not new.

BTW, FSB-only overclocking isn't that bad. I can speak from experience, since I am a former Intel user. Ahh, I wish there were something today as overclockable as the Celeron 300A was in its day... 504 MHz by going from 66 to 112MHz FSB... :)

Well this is a LOCKed CPU then, it means you will not be able to unlock the rest of the cache, so basically its just a TbredB with some high multi. no point of getting it over the barton.

Is it a guaranteed TbredB? The TbredAs were also 1.5v (DLT3C). so it could be a TbredA

They also have DUT3C stepping, and those were only TBred B IIRC.

The applebreds only come in Tbred versions A & B. Check the stepping code next time. I got a MIRGA duron, that corresponds to the AIRGA.

excaliber is the exact same CPU as my sig for $65. It's a B.
