View Full Version : Dell Raptor Drives
Hey all. Here's my story, I'm hoping someone can help me. I bought a Western Digital SATA Raptor drive about 2 months ago. It died, so Newegg replaced it. When I got the new drive, I found that it was not the same drive as I previously had, it had about 2 gb less capacity. After reading this post:
http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=242428
it made sense, Newegg bought a batch of Dell drives and has been selling them. When I talked to the guy at Newegg a couple weeks ago, he told me to just wait a few weeks and then re-order it (he figured they should sell out of them by then). Well, I did that, but I received another Dell drive!
So my question to all of you new (within the last 2 weeks or so) Raptor owners is: if your drive is not a Dell drive, could you please post where you purchased it? I just need to get this straightened out, and I don't think it's going to happen with newegg.
An easy way to check what drive you have is either by looking at the drive, or using Western Digital's WinDLG software. If your model # is listed as WD360GD-75, then it has been made for Dell. If it is WD360GD-00 then it is an original Western Digital drive.
Thanks in advance for your time and replies.

there was a thread on this very thing a few weeks ago, search back for it. The resolution was also in there too,

Yes that was my thread... Call newegg, I did. I told them I called WD and that WD told me my drive was a DELL drive. They said they were going to 'correct/look into' the problem. Obviously not. Ask to speak to a manager and explain the problem, make SURE you tell newegg that WD said this is a DELL OEM drive and should NOT be in the retail chain... If that still fails, call WD and explain the situation, they resolved my Dell drive for me with an '00' drive instead of the '75' drive.
I have contacted both WD and Newegg with no solution. WD says it isn't their problem and the best I could get from Newegg was "order in a few weeks, hopefully the Dell drives will be sold out". So I'm trying to find a different place to purchase from, but I'm hoping to get information in advance as to which companies are selling the correct drive. So, if you just bought a raptor and have the right one, where did you buy it?
Thanks.

Is your drive 37.6GB as stated on newegg's page?
"Size: 36.7 Gigabytes" If not (which I know it isn't) they MUST replace it. I'm calling them again right now...

*edit* Just spoke to a manager at newegg, he is NOW taking action and pulling the Raptor offline til they can sort this out. I would call newegg again and DEMAND to speak to a manager... They will take care of you.
My drive is definitely not 36.7 gb, it is 33.5 gb. I will give them another call - I think I need to speak to a manager as you have suggested, so far every person I've talked to either doesn't know about it or doesn't care to try and fix it.
Thanks.
So... I finally called Newegg. I spoke with a supervisor who hadn't heard of the issue before and said she would have someone look into it. The price of the drive has gone up considerably, this might be an indication that it is the correct one...

duuude! im soooo PEOD! my new raptor is 34.326gb WD360GD-75 model!
grrrrrr i just found nik's thread in a search as to why i couldnt find raptors on sale at newegg.
i just missed calling them by 10 mins also.
just so you know im about to order another raptor for my raid0 array. well newegg better get this str8 and fast!
i want a 36.7gb raptor as thats what i odered!
emailing them also in a minute.what sucks even worse is its my only drive! so even a cross ship im out of my rigs useage.
just so others know, monarchpc has these for $111 with free shipping now. this may be my option as me and newegg are gonna battle on this one.
"edit" i sent newegg this: Invoice #********* Sales Order Number:********** my hard drive has 34.326 total space not 36.7 and im also informed this is a dell WD360GD-75ghao drive and shouldnt even be sold. this is a rather large problem as i use raid0 arrays for my drives and this will couse me to loose over 5gb of space! that is to say when i order my second one which i was about to next week from you until this was discovered. im sure you will exchange it,or refund the money ,as im still inside my 30 day period. pls let me know about what can be done?and if i DO decide to order another second one for my raid array,it better not be like this smaller drive. ty ***** ******
i guess ill be useing overclockix for a few days IF they do replace it.i kept thinking to myself this is too much hassle just to get 2gb i should have recieved.
but then i think,i paid for it i should at least get what i paid for.
and if i sell this drive im gonna take a $20 hit as its not a true 36.7gb drive.
so i want it replaced and if not my orders will go threw monarch.

Maybe they got it figured out now. I bought a Raptor from newegg and received it on 11/15. I check the Model Number using WDC Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool for Windows and it gave me WD360GD-00FNA0 with a capacity 36.15 GB.
