is this right? i am trying to buy a used 8500 from a forumite and he is telling me this card is better than the 9000. from what i read this is true but i want to be sure.

As a side note, if anyone is willing to part with an old card like this one PM me.

yes it is better, i have tried both and i like the 8500 more, but... you have to be sure to get at least 250/250mhz for the 8500, the last version was 250/200 and wasn´t better than a 9000pro

8500 at 275/550 is faster then a 9000 pro at 275/550. This is because of the fact that the 9000 pro has half the texture units per pipe. here is a dmonstration.

Radeon 8500 4 Pipes X2 Texture units per pipe = 8 Max textures in a single pass.

Radeon 9000 Pro 4 Pipes X1 Texture units per pipe = 4 max textures.

The max fillrate of the 8500 is superior to the 9000 pro, however the 9000 pro has more powerful pixel shaders, and a more advanced geometry engine. The sad fact is most of these enhancements go unused, and the fill rate boggles the card down. at the very most, the 8500 is about 10 - 15% faster then a 9000 pro. Most of the time it is closer. But there are a few occasions where the 9000 pro can be faster then an 8500. Both have great Anisotropic filtering though. If it were up to me, i would take the 9000 pro because of fullstream that it has, which gives video a much better IQ.

An 8500 can be flashed to a 9100 bios that will add fullstream.

Are they still making any good old 275/275 8500? Those were the best 8500.

no an 8500 cannont be flashed to a 9100, for fullstream is a piece of hardware which no driver adds, a 9100 can be flashed to an 8500, but not the other way around. thats liek saying a gf2 can be flashed to a gf3.

i know it's an old card but it rules here. we are used to playing games in less than perfect conditions. let me simply say that not one person that i know has anything better than a 8500 here. and i got to a lot of lan partys.

You know, you wont realy miss fullstream at all unless you watch a lot of movies. AND, it only works in supported media players anyway. I dont think windows media player supports it, but I know divx does.
