While reading through this forum I saw "the pencil trick" mentioned a few times... once mentioned with the 1ghz 266fsb. This is the same CPU I have. And I was wondering what this "pencil trick" to unlock it is and how it is done.

Thanks for any info you can supply :)

Welcome dood, you use a pencil to connect the L1 bridges on your CPU, see attached pic.

oh so I see.....
thx for the quick reply dude...

What exactly is this for?
That is also what I was not sure about.

I just recently got my 1Ghz T-bird (266) and crappy motherboard (so it seems thus far) I was low on cash and wanted to get my first AMD machine going so I went cheap on the mobo to get everything I need.
Bought the ECS K7VTA3 via KT266 only about 75 bucks. As far as I can tell there is NO overclocking features like my Asus CUSL2 w/P3 800mhz.

This trick will unlock the CPU multipyer feature so you can bump it up, but make sure you have good cooling before you try this. Good Luck

ahh thx for the help.... I was reading all over the place and found some places that explained that.

to my understanding I can just overclock with the FSB... I just won't be able to go as high as I could if I used the multipler as well.

Slowing but surely learning.. gonna be a while before I overclock.. I need to get a good fan.. I was looking at the Chrome Orb.. seemed like a good one.. I read a review on it that gave it some good marks.

NO ORB!!!! they will fail you when you least expect it. Ask anybody who has been on here for awhile, ALL orbs are crap.

It's not quite up to par with others, but ThermalTake is getting better. You can find a pretty comprehesive AMD heatsink roundup here (http://www.athlonoc.com/hsfroundup1.php)

I bought a conductive pen with a micro tip... would it be beter to unlock multiplyers with the conductive pen then the pencil? Seems a bit more profesional hehe... But who knows. It was just over 10$ at the local hardware store.

Depending on how much you wnat to spend vs how fast you want to go, look at a swiftech cooler.... I have a MC 462A, and it works like a charm.... kind of pricey ($80 new and WELL worth it) , but if you look on the OC classified boards you can find one for cheap ($30-40) there is also the Mc370, if it is anything like its big brother it is bulletproof..... here is a link to the review of it here.... http://www.overclockers.com/articles347/
good luck! Jim
