Ok, regarding folding, and suggesting it on our other forums.
I would prefer to keep all folding local to OC-Forums.com, as it best fits this community. Feel free to make posts concerning folding on programmingtalk.com and webhostingtalk.com, dbforums.com. We have just acquired 3 more forums, and I will include them on the list here on Monday, once these communities are made aware of the iNET acquisition.
Regarding webhostingtalk.com, make sure you read their rules, and make the post in the appropriate place (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=8).
Once these posts are made, I will make these posts sticky so everyone can make sure to have read it as well :)
BEFORE you do this, I would make sure the concept of "folding" is clearly articulated in a thread, so everyone understands the benefit of participation :)
Finally, In our December letter, which will be sent out to approximately 380,000 registered members of our various forums, as well as HotScripts.com, we will make mention of the "iNET Folding Team" on OC-Forums.com. I will post this portion of our newsletter here for your review and critique.
Let me know if this all makes sense, or if you have any questions or concerns!

When he is talking about iNET folding team does he means separate team or subteam for us ?
So will we get peeps or ?
Wow, that would be great!

He means he will refer to our folding team with a name everyone is familiar with, but if anyone wants to sign up they will be folding for team 32.

this is really good news for the new" inet folding" team 32 and for folding in general. to be honest i didnt think inet cared about folding one way or another. these guys amazed me again with the post above.
OK guys brush up on your folding knowledge and get ready to answer tons of newb questions. Looks like Dec is going to be a banner month for team 32 newbies.
watch out google, here we come :D
Now that it's getting cooler out, and the AC is long out of the window, I have started ramping my production up again....
That's small potatoes if we can get a portion of these people under the Team 32 umbrella though.
Boost forward? More like a rocket propelled shove.  :D
Good news indeed, for the "hometown team".

For those who can't see it, here is the transcrpit. Critique at will.
First off, hi, i'm Cjwinnit (duh). I'm a general forum bod who hangs out a lot here. (www.ocforums.com)
Recently our forum got bought out by iNET interactive and this gave us an interesting new userbase, you. A bunch of us on the overclockers forum run a Distributed Computing project client on our computers called Folding@Home, and we would like to tell you what it is through a good old forum Q&A :)
What is folding?
Folding is a Biology experiment investigating how proteins behave. We model this on computers to see how they "mis-fold".
This (http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding) is the homepage of the project, run by a group at Stanford University. 800 people on this forum do it as a team for overclockers.com. If you decide to do it please feel free to bother us with questions.
We have a sub-forum devoted to the cause here (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=21). We have been doing this for a few years now and have built up a lot of experience.
Why bother folding?
"The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease."
(Credit to Stanford's folding site)
Where did you say you were from again?
Ocforums (www.ocforums.com) is a computing forum owned by iNET.
Does it slow my computer down?
No.
It is designed to use only spare cycles and i've never noticed the difference having the client paused or running. LOTS of benchmarks by lots of forums and websites show the effect of the client on other processes is almost zero.
Why fold for your team?
Best answered by Gabriel Murphy here (http://forum.oc-forums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=238156). I quote:

So Ocforums is a computer geek hangout. Welcoming at all?
We love new members (not too much though ;)). One of the catchphrases there is "Welcome To The Forums!" which sums it up a lot. We would love for you to visit :)
Put it another way, the New Members Post Here... (http://forum.oc-forums.com/showthread.php?threadid=61920) thread in the Folding Team has 1,295 posts and 20,099 views
Any competitive aspect to folding?
Lots. People get points for sending completed work units which are tallied up within a team. Teams are on one master leaderboard. Overclockers is third in the world and we want our top spot back!
How do I set it up?
Download and install the client (link at the bottom of this post).
Where it asks for Team Number put 32.
Add whatever username you feel appropriate. I use my forum name.
That's it! Like all programs there are tweaks you can do, ask in the thread or search the Folding Team at ocforums.
I'm stuck/Any other questions
If you have any questions feel free to ask me or any ocforums folder, we act as a team and have an excellent community spirit. Personally, i'm on Ocforums a fair bit and reply to PM's there quickly. I will be here a lot too I think :)

Aargh, I got boned by the Webhostingtalk rules. I asked the guy who moved the thread but without much help.
I think it's this one:
"Participants may not use the Forum to solicit users for any project or purpose external to the Forum; public, private, or commercial. Most importantly our member base is not a resource to be "mined" by individuals, groups, or businesses, for profit or not for profit. Further; If you SPAM our members in any manner, your account will be disabled."
Any way around this?

I think this is the rule they are using against you:
Participants may not use the Forum to solicit users for any project or purpose external to the Forum; public, private, or commercial. Most importantly our member base is not a resource to be "mined" by individuals, groups, or businesses, for profit or not for profit. Further; If you SPAM our members in any manner, your account will be disabled.
You need to convince them that due to the shared ownership, this project is not external to the forum.

Ok, I sent the following to moderators@webhosting.com:
One of the members of the OCForums, Cjwinnit, had attempted to involve members of your forum in the distributed project, Folding@Home. Due to the fact that you have deleted his post, as well as the following rule:
Participants may not use the Forum to solicit users for any project or purpose external to the Forum; public, private, or commercial. Most importantly our member base is not a resource to be "mined" by individuals, groups, or businesses, for profit or not for profit. Further; If you SPAM our members in any manner, your account will be disabled.
The question then, is the WebHosting forum agreeable to joining in the effort to help understand why proteins sometimes fold incorrectly, thus leading to a greater understanding of Cancers? If the answer is yes, then where would be an appropriate place to advertise the project in your forum, how would like such a request worded, and is there a particular person you would like to post the advertisement.
I was wondering if we could get some kind of official response. We were acting on this post by Gabriel Murphy, who is a representative of iNet Interactive, the company that owns both forums:

We'll have to keep bumping it for now because it's not stickied yet.
Don't forget that Gabriel Murphy won't override their leadership anymore than he will ours.
Nice one Cjwinnit, i'm glad you managed to sort things out with the admin, a big thankyou for your efforts, your a real asset to the team! :)
Hmmm... let us use some low-ball estimates as you would do for most any business:
With 380,000 blind contacts can expect a response of 1-10% depending on the pertinence of the subject matter in relation to the given list of names. Because of CJ's handy work, this is getting sent to a list of some what savvy computer users so we'll just say 5%.
Of this 5% we can again take a low-ball estimate of responses turned into actual "sales" (in this case, folders for team 32), so we'll say 5% again.
So, that's .0025% (5% of the 5% respondents actually start folding for out team) of the initial 380,000, or 950 new folders.
Figure that our average active folder pumps out an average of 500 ppw (again, a low-ball estimate) and you end up with an very conservative increase of:
475,000 ppw(950x500ppw), which is more than double our current output.
Whoa... and that's a conservative estimate.
If something anywhere remotely this awesome comes to fruition, Cjwinnt will from this day forth be known as "The Foldinator". :D

I would low-ball that by half again, considering we are hardware enthusiasts with high-end machines running 24/7 whereas members of these other forums who might join in the effort are probably not, and even if they do join up, how likely is it they will enable -advmethods to get lots of gromacs (to say nothing of forcing SSE on AMD CPu's) and run their box(es) 24/7?
I doubt they'll head over here to talk to us. And if they do we probably should never suggest running -forceasm or -forceSSE as a single lock-up could probably turn somone off to folding.
This is generating not much of a response. Its kind of depressing, it takes no effort and its for a good cause. I don't understand it.
Matt

So is somebody going to contact Stanford and ask that team 32 name be changed to Inet interactive instead of Overclockers.com?
Seems only fair to those people joining us from Inet's other forums that we attempt to have the name changed.... Might help us get more of them to join up.
I found out the procedure- the team founder needs to go here: http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/changeteam
in order to change our team's name while keeping our team's number.

Maybe they think that making a computer work to much wears it out? I know some people that think it wont last long if they do anything other than go online and send emails....and turn it off if they arnt using it for the next 15 minutes...ugh. Somehow we need to figure out a way to change that view. Maybe have somebody start up a contest of some sort to get them interested?
I was getting ready to post in the thread at WHT but the last post was on Christmas day. How do they feel about bumping threads that old? I wouldn't want to resurrect a thread that old and have the mods delete it.

I think it's time for another big giveaway like the Duron giveaway there was a year or so ago.

It may be the only way. Heh. Even if we just do it in house and don't open it up to other forums we will definetly get more members.

Yes, focusing on inhouse first will help alot...and cause others to join up to win and then have alot stay on afterwards. If anything it would bring more attention to folding by word of mouth also. Also...how many "official" members does overclockers.com have? Quite a bit but not that many seem active. If we can just get a good turnout from our own members it would help greatly. Having an article on F@H in with the contest/giveaway explaining how to set it up will show many how easy it is to set up.
Just bumped the WebHostingTalk thread up as it hasnt been done in a few months guys. :)

Well, i guess that shows where thats going to lead us in F@H and their help....nowhere. They just dont want to deal with it for whatever reasons. Many people think it will make their cpu wear out in a few months/weeks under full load or something crazy like that. And if they are away from their computers for 5 minutes because they have to fix some food or something....why ofcoarse they will just turn it right off. Leaving the computer running ALL NIGHT   !!!!! That might make it melt! yeah, I can hardly understand that kind thinking either but many are like that.

I'm starting an internal recruitment if you guys want to check that out, the thread is half way down the page... The productivity of it will be far higher.
