View Full Version : Duron 800 getting me worse framerate? Why?

OK I recently bought a new 800 Mhz Duron system that I built tonight and I put in my Voodoo 4 PCI that was previously in my P2 300 Mhz comp... and I get a WORSE framerate on the Duron. WHY?!?

I'm a big Starsiege Tribes player and I get probably around 30 on the average on the P2 but with this new Duron I expected A LOT more. I get about 18-19 frames per second on a game where people with these types of machines should be getting a ton more than that. It can't have anything to do with drivers because they are the same as when they were on the P2.

I don't have the soundcard in yet, but that has nothing to do with it. I expected a machine with this kind of FSB to have better performance.

One thing that I noticed was that when I loaded Windows 98 onto it, the CD was somehow missing quite a bit of files, and it informed me of this, I had to skip them all because I don't know just where those files might be. Could that be the problem? I can't think of anything... and the thing is, Tribes is a Glide based game, and 3dfx cards are designed for Glide. What is the problem?

Check to make sure you installed your AGP drivers. What type of mobo did you get?

OK here are my specs:

ASUS A7V133 mobo (no audio)
Duron 800 Mhz
128 MB PC133 SDRAM Kingston brand
Voodoo 4 PCI
Western Digital 20 gig HD 7200 RPM
Affreey 56x CD-ROM
Mitsumi 1.44" floppy (like that matters)
300 W PSU

I installed the drivers for the AGP off the CD that came with the mobo. It is a PCI card anyway, though. Could it have something to do with all those windows things not being on the CD? Or should I try reinstalling the video card?

since u said u didnt change the drivers i thought that u didnt install the via 4 in 1 drivers..........without those the performance is like horrible

try that

Yeah I did install those VIA 4 in 1 drivers... it didn't help me at all.... :(

This is very frustrating to put the video card in a machine that could get more out of it and then get less out of it. :(

if all else failed then why don't u format the comp and install everything from scratch ...........i bet that would fix your problems.......or at least it would be good anyway since it's good to format and install everything again if u switch motherboards

If you've installed the 4in1 drivers off the CD then I suggest going to viahardware.com to get the most up to date ones. Hopefully that will help.

This is a brand new PC and a brand new mobo, everything is new. But right now my friend and I are about to totally redo it, reformat, repartition, etc. So I'll tell you how it goes, I'm hoping for a better framerate...
