Der... what?

There is an alerternative, and it is bittorrent.

http://207.36.47.207/tower//torrents/622/dxiw_demo_gsi-exe(1).torrent

I was having trouble connecting to the tracker, but it is going now.

You will need Bittorrent (http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/download.html) or one of the clients. I use the Bittorrent Experimental client (http://ei.kefro.st/projects/btclient/) It's perfectly stable, and has more features then the standard bittorrent.

On topic: I can't wait till it finishes! ARGH!! ONLY 33kbs for 224 meg file! Edit: Is hovering around 60 now... GET SHARING!!!!!

Ah... and Deus Ex 2 being based on the Doom 3 engine? (Which MIGHT explain how some of the creatures look sooooo similar)

you know that talk of doom 3 is disallowed on these forums, and theres no way you could possibly be using the doom3 engine especially since Deus Ex 2 uses the havoc engine

no it isnt based on the doom3 engine, and engines have nothing to do witch creatures looking alike, as they are all created most likely in 3d studio max or maya seperatly from the game engine

First of all, Talking about a released DEMO of deus x is allowed...

Your right about the havoc engine, i think i read early on that eidos was looking into the doom 3 engine, but i guess they passed.

was being sarcastic, sorry, forgot how well that doesnt translate over a forum:D . The point i was getting at was since there is no game out right now using the doom III engine(save the doom III alpha) there would be no way to tell how your system was running it unless of course you were using said alpha;). Next time I decide to be sarcastic ill be sure to use many more smilies:p

ohh and eidos was originally looking at the unreal warfare engine, which is close to doomIII i guess

k cool i wasnt sure if you were serious or not ;)

Anyone else who has this get it to run smooth? its pretty much unplayable for me, but i need to mess around with it more.

k nevermind about the system specs im an idiot, i got it to run smooth at 1600X1200 just with no AA or AF.

Damn this demo rocks, it's looking to be every bit as good as the original and perhaps better.

It sure brings my system to its knees at times though  ... especially at 1600x1200... I'm sure the framerate drops below 25. My 9700 Pro is at 390/325. Wonder what it'll really take (hardware-wise) to be able to play this game with sustained high framerates.

Also here's a potential warning to others. I spent the first hour or so of trying to play the demo frustrated, because every time I would save/load, or restart the demo, I would have do redo all of my settings -- video, key maps etc. It turned out that the user.ini file in the My Documents\Deus folder was set to read-only. So, if you're having that problem, that's probably what's going on.

funny i rember when DX 1 came out it dragged my top of the line machine to its knees. Well DX2 looks like it was going to the same to my soon to be bought 64 machine so i guess ill wait till DX2 is out and doom3 before upgrading.

im running it at 1024x768 and it looks fine

fun game, demo is only one level long though. :(

How does everyone like it? I never played the first deus x and i really enjoyed the whole different mission aspects of this game. It brings FPS to a whole level (as im sure the first one did aswell)

The ragdoll physics seem a little floaty and probably need to be revamped a little. When you shoot someone in the head they fly like 20 ft back which is a little strange.

Fun game, ill definetly pick it up when its out.

Here is a definite read for people having performance issues with the demo.

It's been a sometimes grueling, sometimes exhilarating haul, but Deus Ex: Invisible War is about to ship in the United States.

Like the first game, Deus Ex: Invisible War is all about putting player experience first, offering multiple solutions to problems and letting players decide how to interact with the world. We here at Ion Storm love that kind of game and so do many of you. Once people figure out how to do all the things they can do in Invisible War, the results can be amazing. People playing the full release version of the game really seem to be enjoying it.

The PC demo went live on November 20th, with the Xbox demo to follow soon.

Now that the PC demo's been out for a while, the forums are buzzing and we're hearing from a lot of you. Some of what we hear is positive, while some of you have expressed a range of concerns. (It's great to have a passionate core of players.) To those of you with concerns, we want you know that we're listening to what you have to say. This FAQ is the first step toward addressing your comments and questions.

As you read through the FAQ, please bear in mind the following:

* We're as dedicated to the PC as we are to the Xbox. There are folks out there who feel like we went over to the dark side. I just don't buy that. (In fact, we've been "dinged" by console gamers for making too-PC-centric a game as often as we've been dinged by PC gamers for making a game that's too consoley!) Here's the bottom line for me: I've always believed that gamers want good games, across all platforms. We delivered the game experience we wanted to deliver, regardless of platform. Having said that, we've heard the comments about some of our UI choices on the PC side and we want to address them, whether through an updated demo or a PC game patch or both.

* We hear you loud and clear on issues related to performance and interface. The FAQ below outlines some things you can do Right Now to address some of these issues. We have programmers, artists and designers looking into some of the problems you're seeing (though it may take a little while before we can say whether or when a revised demo and/or patch will be available). Rest assured we ARE investigating the issues you've raised.

* We stand by our game design choices and don't believe we've done anything that "dumbs the game down" or compromises the gameplay experience. Have we delivered exactly the same game we did in June 2000, when we released the first Deus Ex game? Of course not. We honestly feel we've delivered a more focused, purer version of the game we set out to make the first time, one that's more compelling for experienced players and more accessible to the uninitiated. Play the full version of the game and I believe you will agree.

* We believe the Invisible War demo does a fair job of introducing the core Deus Ex gameplay elements. It provides a good overview of the kinds of interactions and choices available to players of the full game. But it is NOT the full game. The full game offers players many more choices than the demo -- more biomods, more tools, more weapons, more character options, more paths, more freedom to choose missions...more of everything. The full game also offers the kind of deep storyline players expect from a Deus Ex game, something the demo was never intended to showcase. (Deus Ex is all about mysteries and conspiracies and we didn't want to include any spoilers in the demo!)

So, check out the information below. See if it helps. Go back and play more of the demo and think about the experience you're having, the level of freedom you get. Then imagine the full game, with more options, more story and even more freedom.

And keep watching this space for updated information.

Deus Ex: Invisible War FAQ

1. Game settings issues:

My user settings are reset to the defaults after I move between maps.

The problem here is that it’s trying to save your settings to your user ini, but that file is not set to writable. (Our mistake--oops.) Find your user.ini file, and right click on it. Go into properties and remove the ‘read only’ tag.

My forward movement and mouse rotation is causing the game to seem laggy.

This is a result of a setting in the default.ini file. The idea was to gain some framerate back, which it does, but this actually makes movement feel ‘laggy’. To fix this, go into your System folder and open your default.ini file and find the following setting:

MouseLagThreshold=75
Change the 75 to a 0, and this should make the control feel much more responsive.

The HUD seems to be taking up too much of my screen, it’s too close to the center.

There are a couple of things you can do to make this less intrusive. Within the game, you can go into options and set the ‘Interface Opacity’ lower. The other tweak is to go into your System folder and open your default.ini file and find the following setting:

FOV__d=61
Change the 61 to a 67, and this will effectively move the HUD to the outer edges of your screen, so more of the game world is visible.

The game seems to lack visual sharpness.

This is a result of the ‘Light Bloom’ setting, which give the game a ‘softer’ or ‘less focused’ feel. You can get to this within the video options in-game. Turning this off will cause the graphics to look ‘sharper’.

I have generally poor performance. The game runs too slowly.

Deus Ex: Invisible War requires a video card with high fillrate capacity. If you are having performance issues, there are a couple of things you can do within the video options menu that might help. (See mouse lag issues above.) Drop the in-game resolution to 800x600 or 640x480. Make sure multisampling is set to 1x.

Please bear with us as we're researching other performance optimizations. Our goal is for as many players as possible to be able to enjoy the full potential of the game.

2. Design issues:

With the new unified ammo type, does that mean my pistol uses the same amount of ammo as my rocket launcher?

Though the ammo type has been unified, weapons do burn through ammo at different rates. Different weapons will give you a different number of shots per clip. This can also be affected by the Ammo Scavenger weapon mod, which will lower the ammo consumption.

The riot prod seems to use too much ammo for the effect it has and takes a long time to knock someone out.

The balancing on this weapon is something we’re reevaluating. Real world tasers can take someone down very quickly, but that doesn’t necessarily lend itself to game balance. We tried to compromise with this weapon, in that we didn’t want it to be an instant takedown, and also wanted to give the AI time to react and get a shot off if you approached from the front. If you sneak up behind someone you can still get the drop on them.

Why don’t headshots with a pistol take out enemies in one shot? That isn’t very realistic.

This is another balance issue we’re reevaluating. The problem we were trying to avoid was the case where the player could simply run directly towards an enemy at top speed and shoot them once in the head with a pistol, thus conserving other types of ammo. The goal with the current setup is to get the player to use more appropriate weapons if they want a one-shot kill. Of course the player can always mod out a regular pistol or find a more effective pistol to cause more damage. Also, we want weapons like the sniper rifle to serve as the best 'head shot' weapon.
