I know most of you are gonna laugh at me or even feel sorry for me, but im having real problems here.
Ive been told that a processor should run at no higher than 60c at the very max but mine is running at 79c-81c.
I know this is well wrong but that is how it was from the day it was bought from the shop.
And to top it off it is now starting to reset quite a lot.
Does any one know if this is the processor getting too hot or the hard drive??
Pleeeeeeeaaaaaaaase will some one help me out here before i fry my machine??

Oh dear god! You're right on the brink of overheating your processor. What are you case temperatures and what heatsink are you using. I'm not surprised you get random restarts. Most processors are rated for use below 90 C, but you should still try to lower them

From what i know im still using the standard one but it shouldnt be that high though should it

Holy cow.....um sorry..It_The_Cow.
I'm supprised that thing will run at all. I would imagine the PAD is still under your HSF. Nedd to get the HSF maounted using some ASII. Check out the front page for some how to's on this.

what kind of monitoring tool or program are you using to see the tem. ?
normally, anything above 60c is not good for cpu.
you might need to buy one of those copper HSF from www.plycon.com

man do u know if your fan dies or even slows down by like 2000rpm your CPU=deep fried chicken i would invest some money into a really good hsf stock just dont cut it when it comes to overclocking....i would get some arctic silver also but i would do this ASAP replace the hsf or majorly underclock it till u get one.....i coudl probly run my 700duron at 500mhz and lower the voltage to the lowest it woudl work...and i could unplug my fan i think my heatsink will cover it but i got coolermaster.
What are your components? Specifically the motherboard, the CPU and the sink / fan combo. Also are you overclocking? Your temps are definately too high but more data would help figure out why.

I havent o/c "yet" because i found out how hot my processor was,
Could it be getting so hot because of all the components i have installed ??
Gigabyte GA-7ZX Motherboard
Amd Athlon @1.2ghtz with no o/c
Agp Tnt 2 nvidia riva m64 pro 32mb
Pci sis 6326 8mb 3d card
Pci Creative Labs 3Dfx 16mb
Pci 32bit 4 channel surround sound, sound card
1 onboard 16 bit via Ac97 sound card
Default monitor
Plug and play monitor
HSP56 Mr 56k modem
4x onboard usb
20gb Maxtor @5200rpm
5gb Western Digital @????rpm
52x LG Cd-rom
8x 4x 32x LG Cd-RW
standard floppy
???h/s + fan (it runs around 5300 rpm)
1 fan onboard my tnt2
1 fan in pci slot
1 fan took from a 240 watt power supply and fixed into back of case
and all this running from a 300 watt power supply.
Now that is my whole system...does anyone think there is any problems with that ?

Sl1m1thy and welcome to the forum. You probally still have the thermal pad from amd still on your processor or your on overload with your power supply and all your componets. I would pick up from plycon.com a Global win WBK-38 heatsink or better for around $25-$35 and some artic silver 2 thermal paste.Do your self a favor and order those things and if you got the money a new power supply minimum 400+watts like Antec or Enermax power supplys.Don't use your machine often at those high temps your doing damage to all your componets especially the cpu. Open your case door for now and get a house hold fan box fan or what ever and place it on the side of your case directly pushing air towards your cpu and motherboard etc... For now also take off your heatsink off the cpu and buy some articsilver 2 thermal paste or get some chepo thermal paste from FRY's or Radio shack. Then reseat your heatsink be carefull you don't wana crack your core.GL man keep posting keep us updated and look for your temperatures in bios mainly it gives the most accurate reading . In my sisoftsandra it said i was at 70c and in my bios it said 38c. Then I updated the program sandra and now it gives me accurate cpu and motherboard temperature readings.

wow..........three video cards in a sys......maybe that's what created the heat
i would recommend a CAK38 or glaciator or swiftech
I've never done anything with one of those motherboards but you do have an awful lot of stuff in your case that could be generating unneeded heat (I understand the possible need of 2 vid cards but 3 seems beyond any need) and blocking air flow within the case to get rid of that heat. With all of that stuff there I suggest the first thing you do is round your cables to increase air flow. Also try things with the door off the side and a house fan blowing in. That should help determine if stagnant air is one of the main problems.

Actually yes, just to be a pest I'll point out that your system doesn't have any memory in it. :)

I find it hard to believe that temps that high could be caused solely by poor airflow and a cramped case - when my comp was in a mini case with the psu beside the cpu rather than above it, and no case fans, it topped out at about 60C with the stock fan. Sounds much more to me like your hsf is not properly mounted. I'd bet my left nipple that heatsink isn't sitting level on the core, or (just as bad) has no thermal paste at all. Like the others have suggested, take the hsf off and reseat it - you ought to be able to get temps down to about 60 even with a stock hsf.
Carefully clean the bottom of the hsf, and lap it if necessary. Being a generic hsf it's probably not very flat, you want to lap it. In case you don't know, lapping means to sand it with ordinary sandpaper on a flat surface (such as glass which ought to be perfectly flat due to the way it's made), starting at about 400-600 grit and working up to about 1200 grit to get a very smooth finish. Get some good thermal paste like Arctic Silver, and apply a very thin layer to the cpu core. Then remount the hsf, being very careful to keep it flat on the core while engaging the clip - don't let it rock back and forth.
Let us know whether or not you have any improvement in temps, or whether you'd like suggestions for a better hsf :)
PS don't worry, as you can see from the above posts noone's going to laugh at you here. We were all newbie once - don't be afraid to ask what you think may be a stupid question, if you don't ask it you'll never get the answer. Welcome to the forums, enjoy them ;D

I have now reseated my h/s and am blowing a 13" household fan into the side of my case and it seems to be sitting at around 69c-70c now.
ive also spoke to one of my mates who said hell sort me out with some thermal paste which was very kind of him,he said it brought his temp down by about 10c so hopefuly that should help quite a bit.
Thanks for the help to all who replyed.
PS i forgot to mention that i had 192mb pc 133 of sdram

DA*N!!!! im suprised it still lives. Go straight to a computer shop an buy urself a decent heatsink like globalwin fop38 or similar.
Turn off ur pc and dont even turn it one before u have lowered ur temp, im really suprised it still lives, how long have u been running it at this temp??

it been running like this for about 3 months now.
i left a message in the wrong place saying that ive got it down to 61.2c now and thats without new thermal paste but luckily ive got some on the way i just need to pick it up, my friend told me that it brought his down 10c so that will help a lot.

hmm... the thermal paste should work, but those temps seem very high indeed... are you sure your monitoring program is working properly? have you felt the heatsink? at the temperature's your reporting, with the heatsink mounted properly, you should be able to feel that it is quite hot...

At last ive got it down to a steady 44c now by taking the advice and buying some thermal paste.
Next on my list to buy is a copper h/s+fan because of the fact that i still have the bog standard Amd one on.
Thanx for all the help to everyone who took time to reply, i just hope i can do the same in the future :)
