This is very weird.
My p4 heatsink fan on 3ghz is 3.8k rpm.
Now i was playing StarCraft and the temp went to 45 celcius, suddenly my p4 fan goes crazier and starts ramping up like a jet engine(i swear it was like a jet engine)....the rpm rose from 3.8k to 6k!!!!!
I quickly closed starcraft and watched the temp goto 30 celcius...but my rpm still stayed(fluctated) between 5.8k-6k rpm. The fan has a 3 pin connector,2 for power 1 for rpm monitoring. Now why did it go up to 6k speeds? How did it go up because there is nothing controlling my fan speed?
I have asus p4p800 motherboard and QFAN CONTROL is DISABLED.
are you sure you didnt hear the battleship? :p j/k
It must be the mobo's feature, can you check the bios to confirm this? QFan control may not work as it should. Try with it enabled
So you're saying it has always been liked this since you got the setup? or it just started to act weird.
Imagine have a tornado fan in your setup, it will blow your computer away if it act like that :p
The stock Intel heatsink is probably temperature controlled. You can see how people set them to full speed here (opposite to what you want): http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=121331
however, that's an older version of the stock Intel heatsink, which only spins up to 3800rpm.

My heatsink fan only spins to 3.8k rpm. IT HAS NEVER EVER GONE PAST 3.8K RPM.
But last night while playing starcraft...the fan RAPIDLY and i mean RAPIDLY started ramping up like a Jet Engine and it went to 6k rpm speeds!!!!!!
When i stopped starcraft it didnt go back down but after shutting down it went back to 3.8k speeds.
I confirmed in bios qfan control was disabled

BTW how does the p4 control the fans speed? The fan has only 3 connectors, 1 red 1 yellow 1 for fan rpm monitoring. I want to know how it suddenly went to 6k speeds because nothing is controlling the fan speed..qfan control is disabled

I FOUND IT EUREKAAAAA! I FOUND IT!!!
It only happens when i reduce my 7 TT case fans rpm using the hardcanoe. When i do my p4 heatsink fan revs up like hell and goes to 6k rpm speeds. I wonder why this happens?

OMG after some testing i also found that i can control my fan speed by using simple software called SPEEDFAN omg .....!!!!!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can put it to 50% using software and it will decrease to 2k rpm.
But if it reaches 43 celcius...it will rev up to 6k and then after 3 minutes rev back down to 3.8k or 50% if i set it to. THIS IS SO FRIGGIN COOL
LOL, good thing you found out why.
what is the max speed that fan should be at?
