I have an AMD 1.33 ghz machine on an Asus A7A266 motherboard.
I have a thermaltake Volcano II heatskink and fan combo as well as 2 case fans.
I am not overclocking my pc, but I think I am having an overheating problem.
When I was playing games with the case on, my computer would just crash after about an hour of playing. I mean completly crash to where I had to push the reset button.
So I took the case off and it ran ok. I installed the temperature monitor and decided to see how hot it was running. With only Windows 98 running my cpu is at 56 degrees Celsius.
When I start to play games I get up into 62 degrees celsius.
This is with the case off.
So my question is what is the normal operating temperature for an AMD 1.33 ghz cpu?
I checked AMDs site and I can't find a straight answer anywhere. Please Help.
First of all welcome to the forums. From your post I reckon you do have a heat related problem. From your temperature readings this confirms my opinion. I got this from AMD technicial section, the maximum temps the core can reach is approx 92C. However a CPU core running at this temp would reduce the life of the processor. You should browse the forums and you'll eventually get a feel for core running average temperatures. I reckon the average idle temp is below 40C and mid 40's to late 40's for a loaded CPU. These temperatures are with air cooled CPU's. For example my CPU idle temp is 39-41C and loaded temp is 45-46C with an overclocked 1.4 AMD FSB 266 @ 1.57.
Tell us a bit more about your temps...room temp and do you have thermal compound !
Sorry about the long post
good luck..

The room I belive is average room temperature. I have not measured the exact temperature but it feels "normal". I just ordered some thermal compound yesterday and applied it. Right now my cpu is holding steady at 53 degrees celsius, my motherboard is at 22 degrees celsius.
My vcore is reading 1.824 however in the bios it is set to 1.75. My cpu fan is spinning at 5000 and my other two fans are spinning at 3000.
I so badly want to get this fixed. I have a 32 mb Geforce 2 graphics card and 512 mb of DDR memory.
Could bios settings be causing an overheating problem, or motherboard and cpu combo? This is the first pc I have built and I am rather frustrated.
Thanks
Creative when you applied the thermal compound yesterday, how much did you add. The proper way to add thermal compound is:
1) Only apply thermal compound to the core (piece sticking up in center of processor)
2)Apply a small thin amount over the core area only.
Too much thermal compound will not allow the heat to transfer from the core to the HSF properly. Also make sure HSF is place properly on the processor. I recommend removing the processor and reapplying a thin amount of thermal compound to the core only.
Also what position are your fans in the case ideally you should have one or more front intake fans and one or more rear exhaust fans expelling the hot air from around the area of the CPU.
Is your HSF an orb structure! You might consider in upgrading your HSF to an SK6 (Thermalright SK6 with delta)
Never give up ............

Get rid of the volcano 2 and get a wbk38 you will see dramatic changes. the volcano 2 is not worth a damn.
Now thats hot my 1.2 is running between 40 - 50 with just the volcano II in it
i havent got around to getting any case fans yet
