So, i want to run an online radio station off my computer -possibly for my website. I want to use this shoutcast thing ive seen online. Anyways, if I WERE to to start a station, and played songs, would those songs have to be legally purchased?

Of course!

You would have to check up on the legalities a bit more, I believe there are special licences you have to buy if you plan on broadcasting it, etc.

There are very few people who go through that bother though. Unless they become a hit radio station, that is.

Soon enough the RIAA, among others, are trying to charge online radio stations a fee for playing their songs (currently they get nothing from it). This has been in debate for years though. If it ever goes through, it'll end up bankrupting all of the professional online radio stations, and killing all of the amateur ones as we know it, putting an end to all of the music on the internet.

Bilal, i know how to use/setup shoutcast... You could buy a server (the thing which you use to connect to and broadcast) or if you have broadband you could make your own which can get complicated if you dont know much about internet broadcasting. Check out www.jaycradio.co.uk which is my internet radio station, and contact me.. (Details are on 'Contact Us' page) - Dj Jay. I'll be happy to help :)
