I am a college student and my bulky case is just a huge hassel when I go home. So im thinking of getting a laptop. Now I went through dell to see what they have and to get a decent laptop i have to spend over a grand and I dont have that kind of money. My friend is selling his laptop but i dont know whats a fair price to offer him. Its a HP Pavilon with the following specs:

Celeron 1.8ghz
512mb ddr ram
30gb hdd
dvd/cd-rw combo drive
ATI IGP 340M video
WindowsXP Home
Also he includes:
original charger, hp brand usb floppy, linksys wireless PCMCIA card, samsonite carrying case.

I hardly play any games, just sometimes warcraft3 when im horribly bored.

*note. The laptop is about a year old.

Well consider that you can buy a brand new Centrino powered laptop for $1000 or a 4-M powered laptop for around $800. Given that those are new and much more powerful than the 1.8ghz Celeron, I probably wouldn't pay more than $300-400 tops for that laptop.

I bought a PIII 800mhz Dell last year from a friend for $300.

I wouldn't pay much more than $400 for the system listed above. The Celeron just isn't a great CPU.

What is the model number? If you provide that we can estimate a price better.

Laptops retain their value fairly well, and that thing would most likely sell for more than 300-400 on eBay.

In the next few weeks you're going to see some really nice deals on laptops, however most of the deals will be made possible by rebates. That means you will probably have to fork out 1000+ initially.

Based on the specs your provided I think a fair price would be about $600. Depending on the condition your friend could probably get around that much on ebay.

My laptop has a Celeron 1.5 GHz and it does just what I need it to do (MS Office, Internet, DVD stuff). I can even play War Craft 3 at a low resolultion, and the only thing holding me from upping the resultion a little higher is the 16MB video card.

that wasn't meant to be a personal attack on those who own celeron based machines.

it was simply a witticism. a silly remark concerning a "neutered" pentium. there are, quite obviously, many acceptable uses for celery. the best of which is, arguably, garnishing an order of chicken wings.;)

I knew it wasn't an attack. I just wanted to make sure that SK knew he could do a little warcarft3'in with that lappytop.
