I have a Gigabyte GA-5AX mother board with a AMD K6-2 400MHz stuck in it and i was wondering which would be faster, overclocking it to 500MHz, buying a K6-2 550Mhz or buying a K6-3 450MHz.

well i didnt know u could still get K6-3's i thought duron replaced them. I dont know how much quicker K6-3 is compared to K6-2 but a 550mhz K6-2 will be faster than one overclocked to 500. hey you could always overclock it to see what happens, and if it fries you wont have lost any (or at least very little) money, so you could get the 550MHZ one anyway!

I can't help you, as I'm not familiar with those lines of CPU's. I can, however, welcome you to the forums, like so: Welcome to the forums!

if u are really in a tight budget then get a new mobo and a duron 600

that's like not a lot and u can o/c it to 1ghz or more

Yeah I agree, you can get duron 600 for 30$. I've seen k6-2 550 for 60$ how much are you getting the k6-x 's for anyway?

Thanks for the info, i think i will buy a Duron 850MHz and a new mother board then.

Get the slowest Duron you can find, 600mhz being the best choice. I picked up a 750 for 39 bucks shipped from newegg.com. In general all Durons will overclock to the same speed so get the cheapest/slowest one and go from there.

I think K6-3s have an advantage over K6-2s because they have on-die cache and more advanced 3D-Now! commands. But K6-2s clock to higher speeds, as you cant buy a 550Mhz K6-3. The K6-3s are faster, but they are rare now.

Personally I would upgrade to a Duron processor. Do what I did, buy a cheap (not cheapest) guarenteed Duron and overclock it like a madman. If you buy a 600Mhz you might have trouble getting it a to a gigahert. If you pay an extra ~$15 and get a 750/800Mhz you can ensure getting to 1Ghz.

But to be honest almost all Durons are the same so they overclock to pretty much the same speed with the correct equipment. All I advise is getting a guarenteed/pretested/overclocked processor

I think i will do that then, but what mother board should i get? I was looking at the Gigabyte GA-7ZX.

I would Recomend upgrading to a Duron if u're planning on not spending much money + I know the K6-2 chips are not very good I have a p 3 500 and it beats a k62 500mhz chip by alot so those chips are not very good so I would upgrade u can get a duron for cheep.

I have used a Gigabyte motherboard (Slot A Athlon) and I was very happy with it. Right now I have an MSI board (socket A) and it works well too. Asus is also good.

I've a K6II 450 running at 550 and apparently, from what others have posted, I'm lucky. Most K6II's won't give more than an extra 50mhz. K6III's are impossible to find. I wanted one when I got my last board but had to settle for the K6II because few had K6III's and, because it was a sellers market for them due to rarity, the price was almost double the K6II's price. I just got a Duron 800 for a price that works out to $45-50 US last month. You'd definately pay more than that for a K6III! There are also a few cheap boards for Durons available I've got the ASUS A7V-E which I paid equivalent to $85 US. Its solid but has a lower overclock ceiling than most boards. Still I'm satisfied (for now). Also Abit is supposed to have a good "budget" board but I can't recall the model name. I suggest you get a cheap Duron and board and you overclock the K6II to it's limits in a second system, thats what I did.

I would wait for the AMD Sledge Hammer 64bit processors . Those processors are gona make my 1.4 obsolete and every one elses processors @ 32bit arcitecture. This is my oppinion to you as I made a mistake I don't wana see people make my mistake lol I bought my stuff and already there talking about 64bit processors ,it makes me mad GL. Heres some websites If you wana upgrade now. Cnet Pc EPoX 8K7A motherboard here. (http://www.cnetpc.com) Pricewatch (http://www.pricewatch.com) Crucial ram (http://www.crucial.com)
