are durons bad for gaming?,and other things, whats the difference between an t-bird and a duron, in performance?
Mine's rock solid. I'm having no trouble with my collection of Need for Speed games. Price / performance wise you may do better with an Athalon (depending on your regional prices) but you will do worse with a PIII (in my opinion).

I got a duron quite a while, when there was still more of a difference in price between the duron and the athlon, so it was a great steal then... for me it has been a very stable chip that runs all the games I play great... with my Voodoo 3 I can get 40fps on my duron 750, which is just fine by me... :)
but now the prices have come down so the athlon is probably the better deal...

I recently built a system with a Duron 800 Mhz and I am completely satisfied. I'm big on Tribes and Tribes 2, and with my Voodoo 4 PCI, I get 80 fps on Tribes 1, and about 30-40 on Tribes 2 with graphics down just a tad. I like this Duron a lot, I feel it is a great CPU for a cheap price.

heck no! the durons are great and the only difference is a little cache and alluminum interconnects the core isnt alluminum just the interconnect's, and the are great overclockers and performers and for the price you just cant get a better chip

The thread speaks for itself. The Chip is great for gaming.

P3's gaming performance is astounding - check Tualatin or coppermine T benches that have been put up and notice that a 1.2Ghz Tualatin is a better proposition than a 1.2Ghz athlon.

im running a duron 800@920
all i can say is that there has never been a better bang for buck chip
cept maybe the old cel300a
the diff between the athlon and the duron is 5-10%
and often the limiting factor is your video card,so its not that bad
in australia there is still a large gap between the two
so i went for the duron and upgraded the other components instead
as for the p3m(tulatin) yes,i admit its a great chip
but whats the price difference between it and a 1.2 athlon??
:)
here the athlon 1.0ghz is over 10$ cheaper than the duron 950, so i would go for the athlon since u got better luck in getting a chip with copper core!! And it would give better performance than a duron running on the same clockspeed + the athlon ocs alot better since it got a copper core.
With some luck u can get it too 1.4ghz

I'm not disputing chip performance. I'm disputing chip performance, per dollar, in my region. My Duron 800 cost me $73 Canadian last month. At the same place right now their price is $79 (apparently I picked a good day to buy) for a Duron 800 and the price for a celeron 800 (100FSB) is $114 Canadian. They don't list a PIII 800 price but the 750 (100FSB) is $158 and the 866 (133FSB) is going for $229.

Clock for clock Athlons will outperform a Duron, however it's not as dramatic as one would think. The Athlons have more cache which in most situations helps their performance in that respect.
I had a Duron 700 @ 900 which I passed down to my brother and he plays a lot of games (so did I) and he enjoys the performance. Myself, I upgraded to a 1.1 Athlon @ 1.3 and I am enjoying the performance.
It all depends on the $$ you have to spend. For the cost of good Duron's now, I would almost recommend that most people buy a good motherboard with as much RAM as they can cram on it, and then buy a Duron that they can O/C a bit with a good heatsink. Should provide enough performance and the money spent on RAM will help in all aspects of computing.

thanx guys, i asked becase i chipped my athlon 1.33 even be4 i got to use it,so i was gonna get a duron, untill i get $, what the heck its only 24$,hey if i like it ill keep it , and pick up a snazzy geforce2 pro or somtin, but 4 now a geforce 256 ddr 32mb,with 256mb ram, duron 700@?, wit a thermoengine with delta 38, ona a iwill kk 266,dvd,burner,and a buncha fans, ps does a duron take a lot a power like an athlon?, i only have a 300watt psu.

I realize this about the connects, but the correction wasn't really necessary. Easier to just say what I said than to elaborate.
sorry if i offended you man, wasnt trying to, thats why i didnt quote you

It's alright, just that minor corrections when I'm trying to be brief are irritating. If you look around, you'll find tons of messages where I've written way too much.. trying to cut down on that when possible. (there are a few threads in the cooling forum where I wrote four or five paragraphs)
