I say he should get the 2.8c since its just a bit more expensive but overclocks much better. the 2.6c's arent very good overclockers. best bet is he goes the amd route though :D

I've has three 2.6's and all were decent Overclockers, but IMHO I'd tell him to try to get a 2.4 MO stepping.

I will leave the choice to him, but in my opinion id go amd since they have the price advantage. also with the 2.4c wont you be limited by ram and your motherboard at such high fsbs? the 2.8c at 3.5GHz at 250fsb with pc3500 ram running 1:1 sounds sweet though :D

tell harryinny3 to PM me.....I'm also a Harry in NY:D

anyway, yeah, I'd go with a 2.4c M0 stepping if I could.
he wouln't be limited by the ram at all.
I'll help him with what memory to get....lot's of choices, but he has to play this the smartest.

mobo's are an easy choice, abit or asus are the way to go.
IS7 is my pic, and he may get lucky and find a newegg refurb....they normaly have all the parts, just like the retail.

anyway, again, have him PM me.

ram wont be a problem if ran async, but this kills performance. also motherboards have limits, the northbridge doesnt seem to like much over 250fsb. ill be supprised if he gets over 3.3GHz on the 2.4c but if he does 3.5 on a 2.8c ill be like ok now get it higher :D

you are sooooo wrong on all parts of what you just said.

running at 5:4 or 3:2 memory ratio, will NOT kill performance as much as you think.
this is not a AMD system we're talking about.

as for the NB not liking a FSB above 250....again, you're quite wrong.
most will do 275fsb with no mods....needing a $5.00 NB HSF to go to 320fsb is a no brainer and so simple to do.

this is the intel cpu forum.....lots of great people are here to help him reach close to, if not 300fsb or above.
man, just have him PM me.....so maybe we can talk on the phone.
I'll walk him through everything from buying to OCing.

the only thing to be carefull with is the memory....
I'll show him 4 or 5 great choices.
two of them being cheap.

I'm seeing mobo/cpu/memory as being around $450.00 total.
this is for a 2.4c, IS7, and two sticks of 512mb memory.
(all retail pricing....if he can get the IS7 as a refurb from the egg, he'll save about $50 more.)

forget what your hearing....this system will be so easy to OC, and will fly like the wind.
the stability will be better then you can ever believe.

the 2.6c would be my second choice.....but it will not have the bandwith that the 2.4c could have.

now is the time to buy.

ok ill tell you what, ill be quiet now and let you pm him. if you think the 2.4c overclocks the best, then prove it to me, I want to see how far he can get it. If it doesnt clock so good, to be honest he doesnt lose much since you can ebay it and get another cpu to try anyhow. Let me know what speeds you think that 2.4c will do?

I hate dealing with air. But am willing to try a higher OC when i get the New proggy. My HS Is awesome. Heavy as heck but works so well. With the 92mm fan it is awesome.

The new Antec case i got sitting here(bare, no parts in it yet) Is awesome. Alot of room for water when i get to it. Also cut a blow hole in it already. This case i have now is great, but not as tall and the lights on the front are bothersom at night.

Thanks for all the help. when i goto buy the proggy ill decide from all the advice.

Harry
