View Full Version : AS5 & Ceramique
I received a PM request to start a thread about this (http://www.overclockers.com/articles885/) article so that it may be discussed. So....
(:D)
I was surprised at the conclusion, I thought the AS5 was supposed to be better than Ceramique. (I use the Ceramique and have no experience with the AS5)

1st i would like to say a good effort but something is missing.
Breakin time used and Some numbers.
"I could bombard you with technical jargon and numbers, but I'm not going to. All I need to say is two words. It Works. Darn well too, I might add."
Please do bore me Mr.B, as a heatsinks breakin time is alot shorter than a waterblocks do to the vibration of the fan.
Also we do need some number ofther than 2-3C better than AS3
Thier is a big difference between 2-3C less than 25C and 2-3C less than 45C...
And since you are cooling with water.. I have NO idea where you sit on a temp range scale. And just another quick comment, would a heatsink not be better for testing temps as it would be easier to get a consistant value, no?
Also you didnt mention for US how much better Ceramique was over the AS5. all you said was its better.
Once again, good effort put out, and i hope to see some more writes ups... But i do like my boring numbers :)
So if you could please comment on this it would be great thanks.

I had the exact same thoughts. We are overclockers. Numbers is what its all about. Please share you numbers. Just saying "its cool" thumbs up!! Dosn't mean anything to I'd say most of us.
2.8 C cooler using ceramique after 1 wk break-in time.

TIMs is probably the hardest thing to test and compare in comuters, as all the variables involved, seating, settling time, environmental, etc. thats why I dont care about reviews about it. I just get the newest one or whatever is on sale.

Cooler than what?
How many watts is that CPU putting out.
I want to know c/w of Paste A vs Paste B
There will be a follow up on the article, with more data. I'll bore you then... ;)
There may be a valid reason why my results (ASC better than AS-5) wound up that way, and it might be a ID10T error.
I don't think I gave the AS-5 enough "thermal cycles". I didn't shut the PC down but once or twice, and that might not have been enough. ASC will "burn in" and set faster by its nature, which is the likely root of my results.
I've got to pull the P4 rig apart early next week, and will take the ASC off, and put some AS-5 on, exactly as outlined at Arctic Silver's site. I'm taking data now with the Ceramique, and this machine has been thru several thermal cycles already.
More data forthcoming....I rushed it, and apologize. I'm doing it over, on a different rig, and the right way this time.

An open letter to those who have e-mailed me concerning this article:
Hello,
I have requested that Joe C. pull the article until which time I can re-write it properly. Obviously, my testing was not only inconclusive, but improper.
I am learning the methodology used in testing, collecting data and formatting it for review, and I dropped the ball on this one. I apologize.
I've had some real life situations ongoing which have taken my concentration away from writing. Sometimes real life takes presidence over which thermal paste is best and why.
I spent this week researching where the local food pantry is.
Todays Thanksgiving dinner was provided by it.
My wife is out of work permanatly with a physical disability, and we have been fighting SSI and Worker's Comp. trying to get her what's due her. I blew out my right shoulder at work a month ago, and then got laid off. Now we're both fighting WC...
I'm not looking for pity, or sympathy. I just want to let you know there's more to life than goop.
Please bear with me while I'm on the learning curve of technical reviewing of products like this.
I'll be the first to admit I f'd up on this one, and again, I apologize.
Happy Holidays.
Regards,
Brian Berryman

Indeed he will. ;)
I've been up to me ears in busy the last couple weeks, with the holidays, family issues, etc.... Been to a couple wakes (not family, thank God...), and all kinds of fun.
I've spent quite a bit of time benching a pair of vid cards lately...actually, three. My Ti4200, and a 9600 Pro and 5700 Ultra from newegg. I went thru it the long way, with a fresh format and install of Windows, etc.. between each card. I also benched them on both rigs in the sig below. Those articles, plus another item from Directron, plus an update on the AquaJoe one concerning the ZIF arm and anchor issue, plus the AS-5/ASC one are in the works...
Thanks for being patient...I've been busy "offline" lately.
