View Full Version : Around 200 for new card.
I have no idea about the newer cards, I stopped looking at anything since I bought the 4200 a year ago. Anyways, I have around 200. Mainly upgrading to run UT2k3 better, and for UT2004 later on. I sacrifice most details for frame rates. So, I have no details on at 1200x760, or whatever the one is above 800x600 is with textures, world detail, and polygons on normal.

yea $200 on ebay for a 9700 pro but you probably need a better cpu if you cant run 1600x1200 with max details in ut2003 like I could and that was back on a stock ti4200 and xp1600. the only catch is I had a demo
When I look at cards, I see all the ati running a lot slower then the 5900s. Then I read that the ati's still out perform. How?
I saw an ati that was like 325-500, and everyone says it beats the 5900. So, I look at the 5900s and theyre all something like 400 800. Dont see how the atis could be better.

do some searches at www.tomshardware.com for 9700 and 9800...you'll see that on very few things are the 5900's faster...particularly if the eye candy is turned up
Yeah, but how.
The 9700 pro is 325-620.
5900 is 400-850.
I just want the best card for my processor for ut2k3. Someone should do a comparison with different processors, and all these stupid cards. The versions, and numbers are rediculous 23423942394239-43 or get this one 12343434 for 50 less.

because you can't compare 325clock of an ATI 9700 with a nvidia 5900 at 400 clock...
the memory speed is more comparable...but it's the whole card's ability to run games fast that's important...

thats because ati does more work per MHz. you see, ati is smarter and they make better cards. Nvidia just clocks them crazy high to try to make up for an efficient core :( and if ut2003 doesnt fly, you need a good cpu, I told you
Thanks, but the thing is none of it matters to me, since I have no where near that high of a processor. One could benefit from the processor speed, and the other, not.
If anyone can provide a similiar link with a lower processor around mine(xp2200).

i would get a 9800 np, when did an athlon 2200 become slow? I have been able to play any game at fairly nice levels of detail at a respectable resolution with a ti4200 and a athlon 1900 i dont see why a 9800 np and a 2200 would be any different.

The FX5900 is a powerfull DX8 card, but it's DX9 performance is castrated. While the FX5900 may be slightly ahead on some DX7 and DX8 benchies, it;s nothing that you'll notice in a game (120 fps vs 117 fps)
In true DX9 app's, the FX5900, even FX5950 can't hold a candle to ATI mainstream R9600XT. The R9800np is in another zip code in DX9 app's......
ATI's FSAA is *much* better looking than the FX5900 as well.
Why anyone would buy a top of the line video card w/ crappy DX9 performance is beyond me. All I have to say is buyer beware about the FX5900.
Wait till the NV40comes out, and Nvidia will be very quick to forget the entire NV3X fiasco
When u say 200... do u mean dollars or pounds or euros???
Im talking about 200 dollars, but I might be able to get that to 250, or so.
Looks like Ill look more at the ATI's. Not that I will be playing many dx9 games, but UT2004 could switch, and update to it.

CC has a great deal on 9800 non pros that would fit your budget, and you may be able to find a 9700pro for that (they are getting hard to find these days). Or the new Nvidia 5700ultra is doing well, as is the 9600XT, both of them retail at $200 and they are comperable in performance (the reviews I have seen show the 5700 a bit faster, but not much).
So, if you want to bargin hunt you can find a 5900, 9800 or 9700pro. If you just want to buy something get a 5700ultra or a 9600XT.

you cant compare mhz from ati to mhz from nvidia.
also dont believe all this mumbo jumbo bad stuff about the 5900.
many, many people have become so brain washed its pathetic and its hard as hell to get a good recomendation on anything but ati.
i put my $$$ where my mouth is and bought a 5900ultra for myself. will be here this week for testing.
ive also owned a 9700 and it was a great card also.but i feel you can get a 9800pro just as cheap anymore.
here are my recomendatiosn per $
$150- 9600xt
$175 -5700ultra
$200-5900nu
$250-5900u/9800
$275-9800pro
most of these are used prices but some can be found retail at that price if you look hard enough.
I want a 9800 non pro for 200 damnit. Oh, well. Ill probably end up with a non ultra 5900 from newegg for 199. I would just get the nvidia, but like you said everyone goes around saying the nvidias suck on dx9 games.
So, annoying.
You can get a 9800 off of Ebay. You can probably get one for under $200 and with Samsung memory if you are patient.
Heh, ebay. Im not the kind of person that trusts ebayers. Besides I dont feel comfortable buying used stuff.
Anyways, still need to find out what card to buy.
Anyone know if UT2004 will be dx9? If it is, then maybe I should go with ATI.

Circuit City sells the R9800 (regular non-pro) for $199
The website? I went to the site, it sells for 299us.
Maybe you're confusing it with the SE version. Dont want that one.
